Patricia Ann Henick
March 1932 - Nov. 16, 2020
Patricia Henick, wife and mother extraordinaire, passed peacefully at the age of 88 with her sister Penelope by her side.
Patricia was a talented and quiet achiever with a gentle forgiving nature, a great sense of humor, and an enduring beautiful smile.
Born in Milwaukee, Wis., her family settled in the Portland, Ore., area when she was a young girl. While attending St. Mary's High School in Portland, she met her future husband John Henick and they married in 1950.
Pat and John's family quickly grew with the birth of six children from 1951-1959. As a busy young mother, Patricia managed to find time to perfect her talents and hobbies in needlecraft, knitting and crocheting, while also earning extra income teaching private knitting lessons and modeling for various commercial products.
As her children approached adulthood, John suggested she get a "real" job. Patricia rejected the social norm of employment as a secretary/office worker and decided to combine her artistic talents and needlecraft hobbies into a business operation. She opened the first Yarn Tree retail store in Aloha, Ore., in 1972. Her entrepreneurship led to the opening of three other retail stores located in major shopping malls in the Portland Metro area.
Patricia's business success motivated her husband's early retirement from public school administration, and then he became her "right-hand man." John's career as Patricia's business partner involved managing the logistics and accounting for all the Yarn Tree stores.
Looking towards retirement, Patricia reduced her enterprise down to one retail store in the Beaverton Mall, which she eventually sold in early 1990's.
Patricia and John bought a retirement home in the (then) newly built Claremont neighborhood in Bethany. They were active in the Claremont community, in their church, St. Pius X, and volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Pat and John enjoyed many retirement years together until John's passing in 2012. Patricia eventually relocated to the Ackerly at Timberland in Portland where she lived independently until the summer of 2020.
Complications from Alzheimer's forced her relocation to the Heritage House Adult Care Home in Portland in July of 2020. A recent fall resulting in a fractured wrist and shoulder accelerated her into hospice level care. Her family would like to acknowledge the excellent compassionate care she received at Heritage House - thank you all for gently guiding her "across the river."
We are all really going to miss Patricia, she was one in a million.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, John; her bothers, Joseph and Brian; her sister, Mary; her daughter, Christine; and her son, Daniel.
Patricia is survived by her sister, Penelope Monroe (husband Jim Monroe); son, James Henick (former wife, Janet Henick); son, Marty Henick (wife, Kim Farthing); daughter, Lisa Raskin (husband, Keith Raskin); daughter, Jan Henick-Kling (husband, Thomas Henick-Kling); 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Patricia also requested a private funeral with immediate family members only. A future memorial is planned in the Portland area, the time and date to be determined when Covid-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted.
Patricia requested any memorial donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council, 8101 S.E. Cornwell St., Portland, OR 97206, or at their website -www.svdppdx.org

2020.11.23 00:59 JohannesTEvans Tale From A Gravedigger (Part 4) (Final)

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Dear Peter,
Sometimes when I read my books these days, I think about the way you would read to me – I think about the countless times we lay together in the belltower, the only warmth to be found in each other, my cheek rested on your chest, as you read aloud from whatever book I was reading and mocked every line in the same breath, but you always did it with such affection.
It never wounded me.
Sometimes, the way people talk about books like that, they do it with such scorn – they are disgusted by the delight with which so many people read them, criticise the women (and they only ever mention women) who read them, say that they are lacking in character or plot or craft, and it is so derisive that it does wound.
Not when you made fun of them, Peter.
It made me laugh, when you made fun.
You always sounded as affectionate about the books as I did.
Last night, as I locked the door to the shop, it took me by surprise when the music box began to chime its tune, and it shocked me so much it hardly even occurred to me to cry. I just stood there, stock-still, watched the little dancer spin in front of the mirror, listened to the song.
I can never remember what it’s called. Mozart or Beethoven or one of them, I know you told me, Peter, I know you told me a dozen times, but I don’t remember anymore what it was, and I hardly have anyone left I can ask.
Last night, when you sat on the bed beside me, I felt the mattress depress, and I didn’t dare open my eyes because I didn’t want you to rush away if I tried to look at you, and I wanted so badly to feel you warm on the bed beside me, but you weren’t cold, even – just there. I fell asleep imagining you were stroking my cheek, and woke again when you knocked on the walls so hard that dust fell from the rafters.
I miss you, Peter.
Your beloved
* * *
Dear Peter,
I saw Christine yesterday.
I didn’t know that she’d recognise me, not from the one time that she caught a glimpse of me climbing out of your bedroom window – perhaps she didn’t recognise me at all, but simply knew that there had been a man, that you’d had one.
I didn’t see her before she saw me. I was lost in my own world, standing over your grave and huddled in my coat, speaking under my breath to you, and she must have had a moment to rev up her engines, so to speak, because when she ran up to me it was with more fury than I’ve ever seen.
“Get the fuck away from him!” she screamed at me, like the harpy she always was. “You have no right, no right, get away from here!”
That wasn’t all she said, of course. She had a lot of other choice words besides, but they were the sort of words you never liked to hear – the sort of words you used to tell me you’d rinse out of my mouth, if you ever heard me repeating them.
It used to make me smile, when you said things like that.
I don’t really smile at anything anymore.
I know she’s your sister, Peter – I know you loved her, that you were always patient with her, but as much as she loved you, she hated what you were, what we were. But I don’t know how you used to stand it, the way that he was – I don’t know how you stand it now.
Perhaps that’s why you haunt me instead of her.
I hate to ache for you, Peter, the way that I do, desperate for you to touch me again and knowing that you won’t.
When you knocked on the door last night I ran so fast that I tripped on the rug, but I thought in the moment that if I couldn’t only get there fast enough, haul the door open fast enough, pull the phone off the receiver fast enough, answer you fast enough, that you might really, truly be there.
But you weren’t, Peter.
The hallway was as empty as always; the phone was as silent as always; I was alone as always.
It isn’t fair.
Your beloved
* * *
After work that day, I walked over to the church proper, and caught the end of the church choir’s rehearsal, watched all of them singing – they were readying Christmas carols leading up to the reason, and it sounded good to me, not that I knew anything about music at the time, or even know anything about it now.
Arthur was stood at the front, but he wasn’t the conductor – the conductor was a tiny old woman who had taught me maths at school, and as tiny as she was, she had lungs on her like a fucking bellows, could produce sound you’d never expect from someone her size.
When Arthur saw me, he looked at me with concern, raised his eyebrows as if to ask if I needed him right this second, but I shook my head, mouthed it was okay, and waited for them all to finish.
I heard someone call her Christine, and I turned to look at a tall, thin woman in a burgundy jumper, wearing pearls. She looked very neat and well put-together, but there was a gauntness in her cheeks like she didn’t get enough to eat.
“I’m going to go along to Peter now,” I heard her say to one of the other women, and I watched her friend step back to let her pass, watched her pick up a little box of flowers to put on his grave.
It had begun to drizzle outside, but that didn’t seem to deter her, and I said, “The side gates are locked, Miss. You’ll have to use the main gate.”
She sniffed at me, looking at me with a haughty look on her face, glancing down at my cane. “You’re Raymond Darvill’s boy. His grandson. I don’t see how anyone can dig graves with a cane.”
“Er, I don’t,” I said. “I’ve been cleaning up the chapel, and I keep the books in order. I used to be a postman.”
Something changed in her face, a sort of catch, and I watched her lips downturn slightly, saw the expression of something almost like sympathy as she glanced down at my cane again.
“Car accident,” I said.
She nodded, stoutly, and then she walked off very hurriedly, the block heels of her boots making a loud click-clack on the stone floors.
“She was very gentle with you,” said Arthur, and I huffed out a low, almost-laugh as I followed the old man toward his office, standing with my back toward the old halogen heater so I could let it warm my backside and my sore hip – the rain was tugging at it, it seemed to me, and making it worse than usual, that day.
“I wanted to, I wanted to ask you a question,” I said haltingly, tapping my fingers against the side of the cane’s handle, pressing against the varnished wood every few moments.
“Ask away,” Arthur said, sinking slowly down into his chair with a soft sigh.
“My granddad,” I said. “If he saw letters on a grave, what would he do with them?”
“Leave them,” the pastor said, looking at me funny, his thick, furry eyebrows furrowing together, like two kissing caterpillars. “He left everything on a grave as long as he could without it causing a problem.”
I looked at him. I don’t know what my face looked like, don’t know if it showed on my face what I wanted, what I expected him to say next, but I watched him sort of falter, his lips parting, and he looked at my all serious, concentrated, and then he slowly crossed his arms loosely over his chest, leaning back in his chair so that it gave a musical creak.
“This is about Peter Denborough,” he said slowly.
“Yeah,” I said. When he said nothing, I said, “You knew— You knew, right? About his boyfriend? He wrote letters. It looks like my granddad picked them up. To keep Christine from… You know.”
“Yeah,” Arthur said. “Yes. She’s not as volatile as she used to be.”
“Still a homophobe?”
“Don’t look at me,” Arthur said. “It’s not what I preach.”
I laughed, dragging my thumb over my lip, and then I asked, “Did you know about his boyfriend? At the time? Before he died?”
“Yes, I knew,” Arthur said. “I never knew who he was, but I knew that Peter had a regular… Whatever you want to call it. Christine mentioned it to me a few times, she wanted it to stop – it was illegal then, you understand. A lot of police would be very glad to… Well. It wasn’t talked about, and I think Christine had an understanding that she was well off enough that she could ensure Peter got away with everything his partner didn’t. She wanted to know what his name was, always asked me if I knew.”
“But you never did?”
“No,” Arthur said quietly.
“His parents were dead,” I said. “They both died, I think maybe the same year Peter did. Does that ring a bell?”
It was a subtle change in the pastor’s face. His eyebrows jumped up a tiny bit, his lips went sort of loose on his face, and I saw his eyes move a little, like he was studying something I couldn’t see – realising something I wouldn’t know anything about.
“No,” he said. “No, it doesn’t.”
I knew it was a lie, and I think that in that moment, he knew that I knew I was lying, but the two of us just stood there, looking at each other, and then I nodded again, wrapping my hand more solidly around the handle of my cane.
There was one final letter for me waiting at the chapel, and I was terrified to face another night as a corpse, so I didn’t go home, but walked back to the chapel and stepped inside. Christine was already gone by the time I went back to the graveyard, but I didn’t mind that.
I wouldn’t have to talk to her until later.
* * *
Dear Peter,
I can’t stand it, Peter.
I’ll die.
I’ll die if you keep doing this to me, and I’ll die so slowly, Peter, so torturously, of sleep deprivation or starvation or just of heartache, and I can’t bear it, I can’t bear it anymore, because I want you back so badly, I need you, and I feel like you’re just behind a shroud, just out of my grasp.
Do you remember, Peter, how we used to meet?
How I’d light a candle and sit with my book and when you came into the bell tower you’d blow out the candle, and in the dark, we’d be together again?
I know I mustn’t ask, Peter.
I know I mustn’t encourage it.
I know I told you you shouldn’t and that I didn’t want you to do this and I know I told you that you had to leave, but, Peter…
Tonight, Peter.
Tonight, I will light a candle in the bell tower, and I’ll wait for you, Peter.
Please, come.
And if you don’t, if you don’t, then…
Please.
I miss you, Peter. I love you, Peter.
I just need to know what the last page of our book together would have been – I just need to know that I’m not mad, that you’re there, really there, I just need a real sign, I need you, Peter.
I’m nothing without you.
I feel sometimes as if I am the ghost you’ve left behind.
Please come, Peter. Please.
Your beloved

I don’t know how long I stood there in my grandfather’s old office, turning the letters over again and again, rifling through their envelopes, looking at the back of the letters, trying to search for any kind of clue or hint as to what it all meant, what came next, but there wasn’t anything. Why would there be?
It was a collection of fucking letters from a grieving boyfriend, not a treasure hunt, but…
Well.
Well.
I saw through the office window the man standing over Peter’s grave, the same silhouette I had seen before, and I rushed to grab my helmet and stumbled as I limped as fast as I could out toward the door, and when I walked out under the rain, my cane and my boots both squelched in the grass.
The silhouette, the ghost, was still there as I walked up the path, until I got close enough, and then it faded away into mist again, like it had before, and I stood there, breathing heavily, feeling the cold, wet air in my lungs, feeling its sting on my cheeks.
Christine’s new flowers rested on Peter’s grave.
Maybe—
Maybe it had happened before. I would never have seen it from inside of the chapel, but all the times I’d walked the graveyard before, it had been early in the morning or in the evening – it was nearly nine o’clock now.
The candlelight in the belltower flickered slightly, as if someone was moving inside, and it sent a wave of tower running down my spine.
I didn’t know, for a second, what the Hell I was supposed to do, didn’t understand it, because the stairs had been destroyed, so how was I meant to get up there, how…? And it was like… I don’t know, it was light seeing it highlighted, somehow, light there was a spotlight – a car must have passed by, and the light shone on the building exactly where it was supposed to show.
All at once, I saw the low roof of the mausoleum, covered over with turf so that you could walk straight up onto it; I saw the thick, layered ivy up to the flat edge of the end of the chapel roof; I saw more ivy, thick and luscious and green, that led all the way up to the opening of the belltower.
No wonder it was their safe haven, if they started to meet up there after the stairs were gone.
I know it was crazy, and I know I shouldn’t have done it, especially not with my hip, but I did – climbing up onto the mausoleum roof was easy, but climbing the ivy up to the first roof and then to the other was probably the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done in my life. The ivy held as I climbed it, and although I could feel the leaves shift under the weight of my hands and my feet, as I moved up through it, it didn’t tear away even slightly from the wall, the ivy was so tightly embedded, so strongly rooted against it.
My hands trembled as I climbed. My hip ached, and the higher I climbed, the keener the pain got. It wasn’t really a tall climb at all – like I told you at the start, the actual tower wasn’t much taller than a normal house – but I wasn’t ever an athlete, and I couldn’t even climb trees as a kid, let alone fucking walls.
It hurt.
By fuck, it hurt, hurt more and more and more, and yet somehow, the roaring, screaming pain on the whole of one side of my body as I forced myself to climb higher, shoved myself flat again the building, it drove me onward.
It was agonising, that pain, but it was nothing like the cold, throbbing pain I’d felt in my waking, haunted nightmares – this was a hot, searing pain, and it made me know I was alive.
When I got to the top of the belltower, there was a kind of outer ledge I could get my knees onto, and I rested my hands against the ledge that was a little higher than my head – the edge of the bell tower’s room, or entrance, whatever you wanted to call it. I was breathing heavily, and I could taste the torch that I’d decided to carry in my mouth like some idiot cop in an action movie, and it tasted fucking awful, like rubber and salt.
I hauled myself on shaking, pained legs to look into the bell tower.
The lit candle rested on a little dish, flickering slightly in the wind, and it illuminated the room, which I realised now must have been over the bell itself – there was a gap in the centre of the floor where the chain suspended from the frame at the top of the ceiling went through, and I could see the top loop of the bell through the gap. This room, with wooden floors, was on top of the bell itself.
Beloved’s corpse was staring at me from sightless eye sockets, empty. It wasn’t a skeleton just yet – the body was shrivelled and rotted and old, but it didn’t smell like anything except a sort of musty sweetness, and cobwebs, and dust. The body had a mildewed old book in its lap, was wrapped in blankets, and I stared at it, stared for—
I don’t know how long.
But not long enough that the candle’s wick had burned down, and not long enough for a sudden gust of wind.
The candle went out, and the tower was plunged into darkness.
I think I screamed as I fell.
* * *
The most remarkable thing about it, I suppose, is that I didn’t have to go to the hospital afterward. I’d had a soft landing somehow, despite the height of the fall, and I had a few bruises on me, but that was all.
When I called the police, they didn’t really believe me, and I had to limp into town the next morning to get one of the constables to come along, and Joel, the kid who actually dug the graves, managed to get a cherry picker for us, to bring us up to the bell tower without needing a ladder.
I don’t think PC Plod had seen a dead body before, because he vomited over the side of the picker’s trough, and there was something artistic about the way the spatter fell all the way down to the grass.
I don’t want to tell you his name.
He never signed it, and I feel like it’d be wrong, somehow, to put it out there when he never wanted it put out there, but I’m sure, like anything else, if you really wanted to know it you could probably find it out.
His parents had died, like I’d suspected, in ’59, in February of that year, of carbon monoxide poisoning after some sort of leak in their flat, which was above the antique shop in town. When he disappeared, the sad thing was, no one ever noticed. I think he must have gone up there in February or March, but it wasn’t mentioned in the local police reports until July.
It wasn’t anything unkind, it wasn’t intentional – I don’t think so, anyway.
It was just that beloved was telling the truth, when he said Peter was the only connection he’d had left. It seems like people noticed the shop was shut, but everyone just assumed he’d gone off somewhere, and run away. The police report at the time described him as shy, sweet but insular, not comfortable with people.
I tried to tell Christine.
I went up to her, with the letters – the cops refused to take them, what with how they weren’t signed or anything, so they didn’t count as evidence – I tried to explain, to explain that…
Ah, fuck it.
I don’t know what I’d have explained to her, and it doesn’t matter either way: she told me to fuck off, and she called me, I’m sure, a lot of the names she’d called beloved.
* * *
For years, I was alright.
I met Gez down in London while on a weekend retreat with my parents, and despite the fact that I told him this from the get-go – almost shamelessly – he fell instantly in love with me, and we’ve been together ever since.
Disclaimer: that’s not exactly, or even at all, how it happened, but the result is the same.
The nightmares started about a year or two after that.
They were intermittent, at first, once or twice a year, and then they happened more often… This year, they’ve been every week. They weren’t the corpse dreams, mostly – I would dream at first that Gez was almost there but I couldn’t touch him, couldn’t feel him, couldn’t see him, but that he was there, just out of my reach, and it was agonising.
But this year, the corpse dreams started happening again.
I knew the whole time I needed to write it down, I knew that I…
They wanted it told, I think, one way or the other.
They wanted those letters read.
I think about it, regularly, I think about it, ‘cause it’s fucked up.
I love Gez. I love him fiercely, powerfully – I love him in a way I never expected to fucking love anything, anybody, and it’s a kind of hot feeling in my chest whenever I look at him, whenever I think of him, and I know he loves me too.
And I read beloved’s letters to Peter, sometimes, and I think about the fact that in those letters, there’s never any proof he was being haunted at all.
No friends. No family. No one who’d be able to vouch for if he was acting normal or not, if Peter was an actual ghost with him, or if he was just a grieving man gone crazy with grief.
You could say I was crazy, too, and maybe I was, but I do think what I experienced was a haunting, simply because I had to discover things as I went, because I ended up at the end with a corpse – if it was a haunting, I’m uncomfortably prophetic, and I’d rather it was the first thing.
I was haunted. But was beloved?
I don’t know.
As I finish this up, I’m watching Gez.
He’s fallen asleep on the sofa with Wodehouse collapsed like a ton of chubby bricks on top of him. He’s still got his reading glasses on even though he knows it leaves a horrible imprint in the side of his face when he sleeps like that, and his phone is dangling from his hand.
They couldn’t find a cause of death for Peter’s beloved. The body wasn’t well preserved, even though it was put together – it could have been a heart attack, an aneurysm, a heart attack, anything. I wonder sometimes if Peter killed him, or if he just died of grief.
I wouldn’t want to do that to Gez – I wouldn’t want to haunt him, and I don’t think he’d want to haunt me, but if he did, would I go crazy with it? Would I die of it? If I was dead and Gez was still alive, would I torture him so much that he died, just so we could be together?
I hope not.
But I love him, you know. I love him so much, sometimes, I love him so much that I could…
Maybe I won’t show him this part.
I feel so… relieved, having written all that down. Like I’m finally free, somehow.
Like it’s over.
Thanks for reading.

2020.11.13 03:10 portlane Mathew Vranizan (Nov. 20, 1928 - Nov. 2, 2020)

Mathew Vincent Vranizan
Nov. 20, 1928 - Nov. 2, 2020
Mathew, "Matt" Vincent Vranizan, 91 of Portland, Ore., peacefully passed away Nov. 2, 2020, from Hairy Cell Leukemia. Early this year, after many years asymptotic, the disease became active, leading to a (relatively) few months of ill health.
Matt was born Nov. 20, 1928, to Matthew and Cathrine Vranizan, the eldest of four sons. Early on, his parents called him "Sonny Boy," an endearing nickname that endured. He was raised in the Irvington neighborhood where he went to grammar school, and had a paper route as a boy.
Matt attended Central Catholic High School where he played football, and was a downhill ski racer. During the winter months he'd get his mother to drive him to the highway where he could hitchhike up to Mt. Hood.
After graduating high school in 1947, Matt served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Japan for a year. He climbed Mt. Fuji, while he was there, which made the local newspaper at home.
In 1952, he graduated from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He worked as a houseboy in one of the sorority houses, which he said wasn't a bad place to meet girls. Matt made many lifelong friends during his time in Eugene, including his beloved wife to be, Joan Murphy.
Matt and Joan were married in 1953 in Madeleine Parish, later becoming members at St. John Fisher Church. In 1954, they moved to a new home in S.W. Portland's Bridlemile area, one that was added on to, and remodeled as the family grew to include six children, within 10 years. It was a cherished home with a beautiful yard, one which the family enjoyed for 63 short years.
Matt was a hard working salesman, and a people person, who during his career, built long lasting relationships. He partnered in business with his cousin Jim Vranizan, wholesaling women's fashion accessories.
J.M. Vranizan Company was started in 1922 by their fathers, James Sr. and Matt Sr., which over the years grew into a vibrant family business. Matt enjoyed the people he worked with whether his customers, salespeople, manufacturing reps, or those that worked in-house; he was well liked, too. He traveled frequently on sales, and buying trips, as well as, to trade shows. Matt especially liked the times when his kids worked with him. He wasn't eager to retire, but finally did around 2008.
For many years, Matt was an avid year round golfer; he was a member at Columbia Edgewater, and Astoria Golf club. He enjoyed several long running annual golf events, traveling extensively to play, including to Britain with Joan, and friends. Matt treasured the times he spent in Gearhart with family, and friends, too. Joan and he also loved hosting family dinners, and celebrations in their home; Matt always content having a fire in the fireplace, and the house full of family.
After 56 years of marriage, Joan died. Matt was determined to stay put in the house, which he did for seven more years. During these years he received extra support from family, and friends. Every Tuesday night he could count on a lively family meal at the house, often along with Seinfeld reruns. Although very sorry to leave his house, in February 2017, he moved into assisted living. Until this early March, he went out regularly for several weekly social lunches, occasional family get-togethers, and weekly Mass.
Matt's last several months during the pandemic were more difficult due to the isolation, and his overall health decline. Fortunately, he was able to have family visits over his last nine days, and a peaceful passing.
Matt was generous, kind, caring, and sensitive. He demonstrated gratitude, especially for his kids' loving care, and was always one to count his blessings.
Matt is survived by his six children, Greg, Tom, Karen, Pete, Joe, Christine; eight grandchildren, Nicole, Eli, Rachel, Abbey, Nia, Molly, Shana, Liam; two great-grandchildren, Hazen, Emi; brothers, Ralph and John; daughters-in-law, Tracy Vranizan, Debbie Vranizan; sons-in-law, Dale Kimmerle, Phil Meaney. Wife, Joan preceded his death, February 2010; and brother, Edward preceded his death, August 2018.
A funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at St. John Fisher Church, Portland.

2020.11.07 06:34 Reddit-The-Webs-STD Darktrace and Cybereason: The Intelligence Front Companies Seeking to Subjugate the World with the A.I. Singularity

We have all been dreaming, a dream where you can float or glide across your dreamscape effortlessly. This leads to the feeling of trepidation, as though you have the ability to let go, and if you do let go, you’ll either soar or fall.
We’re now at a point in history where either the coming events will be studied for thousands of years, or it will be remembered as the point where we lost our humanity completely. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) technology has entered a new phase over the past several years, where instead of the A.I. algorithms learning from humans, they are now teaching themselves, changing their own algorithms as they learn. We are on the cusp of letting go of control entirely, so early on, because of a few small companies who have quietly been given free reign under the guise of “protecting” our digital lives, all within a tech sector that is moving so fast that we can no longer see what’s just around the bend.
The entire free thinking population of Earth would love a little more time to discuss such epochal change. However, the technocrats and scientists, supported by venture capitalists, are already putting into action the future before the masses have a chance to even consider discussing its consequences. With very little legislation governing A.I. technologies on the books, our governments are eager to get every tech pioneer inventing whilst there is no accountability for any resulting harm. We’re not talking major societal disruption, we’re talking about a potential extinction level event of our own creation. Where we should be taking cautious baby steps, instead we’re expecting to fly just by letting go.
We are about to experience a monumental change in technology, starting with “next-generation” cybersecurity that will then move quickly into the unknown. Unsupervised A.I., now running on critical networks throughout the world as a “cybersecurity” product, is evolving its own algorithm without the need for humans to be involved. Meanwhile, the wealthy patrons funding this cutting edge future tech are out in force, working to propel our societies into this new, unexplored and dystopian technological frontier.
But who are the companies that these eager wealthy venture capitalists are funding to create an autonomous, A.I.-powered cyber defence system like never before? Are they even companies at all when we consider their deep and direct ties to intelligence agencies? Should these firms instead be reclassified as simply extensions of state intelligence apparatus acting without the restrictions of public accountability?
Each of these companies have been built by teams of former intelligence operatives, some of who have sat in the highest echelons of the intelligence apparati of their respective countries. MI5 and C.I.A. both carry considerable weight in these sinister sounding enterprises, but it is Israel’s Unit 8200 that are the main group capitalising on this advance into the world-altering realm of unsupervised Artificial Intelligence algorithms.
Yet, these very companies appear to be selling a defence against a potential apocalypse that they themselves may be responsible for. They have the solutions to everyone’s cyber-woes, or at least that’s the image they wish to portray. Let me introduce you to the most dangerous intelligence operations masquerading as cybersecurity companies on planet Earth.

Darktrace – The Unsupervised Machine Learning A.I. Cybersecurity Solution

The members of Darktrace are open about their aims. They talk about publicly held data as though they already have the rights to sell it to anyone around the world. Data is the fuel of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Darktrace has made almost $2 billion in the data business during its relatively short history, reaching Unicorn status) with great ease. When Darktrace first launched its website in 2013, its description of the company’s vision was entitled, “The New Normal: Learn Human and Machine Behavior to Reduce Cyber Security Risks.” Back then we were less familiar with the term “the new normal,” but now it surrounds us. Darktrace is already active within the NHS, the U.K. power grid, and many other major parts of Britain’s critical infrastructure and they are rapidly expanding around the globe.
Dave Palmer was an MI5 anti-terror agent working on the 2012 London Olympics when he and some of his colleagues first bashed out the initial idea for what would become Darktrace. They wanted to create an A.I. cybersecurity system that was based on the human immune system, a system that differed from the traditional, reactive antivirus software approach. This system would look for abnormalities in a computer network’s processes to target a wider range of more sophisticated cyber issues.
Palmer had spent 14 years working for MI5 and GCHQ in a role creating secure networks for British spies to communicate. He would eventually approach two mathematicians from Cambridge University to help make his dreams reality at the tail end of 2012. These mathematicians were working on projects related to using unsupervised machine learning to teach a computer to have a sense of self, a step that would bring such technology dangerously close to the so-called singularity. At that point, as critics and proponents of self-aware A.I. alike have warned, that machine intelligence will not only surpass human intelligence, but advance at an incomprehensible rate, which major and world-altering implications.
In a TechCrunch talk in 2016, the freshly installed co-CEO of Darktrace, Poppy Gustafsson, is caught misleading the audience about the company’s origins. She uses the TechCrunch stage to claim that the “spark” for the creation of Darktrace originally came from the mathematicians at Cambridge and downplayed the involvement of intelligence agencies like MI5, GCHQ, and the C.I.A. The TechCrunch moderator, Natasha Lomas, displayed some fine journalistic integrity on this occasion and asked for clarification. “So did the maths research come first and then you got together with the spies. Which way round was it?” asked the intrepid Lomas. Gustafsson squirms a little before saying, “it was exactly that. First the machine learning that was talking about how to critique a computer to help it understand itself. And then it was the, um, experts from the government intelligence agencies who thought ‘ooh, this could be applied to the problem of cybersecurity.’” But that statement was an outright lie and Gustafsson isn’t the most skilled deceiver.
Gustafsson, who was initially CFO and COO for the fledgling Darktrace, runs the company alongside the other co-CEO Nicole Eagen, an alumnus of Oracle, a major tech company that also has its origins in intelligence. Both parts of Darktrace’s female power duo were brought over from Invoke Capital by Darktrace’s initial angel investor and advisory board member, UK billionaire Dr. Mike Lynch OBE. Describing himself as the “UKs answer to Bill Gates“, Dr. Mike Lynch is lauded as one of the most influential investors in the tech sector. His previous successful endeavours had been with Autonomy, a tech firm that has Lynch caught up in a legal wrangle with HP over the fraudulent inflation of its valuation, and Blinkx, a video search company where Lynch was later forced to step down from the board.
Dr. Mike Lynch’s problems with Hewlett Packard are not to be understated as was made clear in a Telegraph article that described it as “the trial of the century.” But, before that spectacle can take place, Mike Lynch must first be extradited and his protracted court battle to resist extradition has led to some uncertainty surrounding the future of Darktrace whilst Lynch is still active within the company. It was also recently reported in the mainstream media that the Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs had declined to take a role in the initial public offering (IPO) of Darktrace due to Mike Lynch’s ongoing extradition battle.
Yet, Darktrace is not just one man working alone. The company boasts that over 4000 organisations worldwide now rely on Darktrace’s A.I. technologies. With headquarters in San Francisco, US, and Cambridge, UK, Darktrace has over 1300 employees spread across 44 countries and their numbers are rising. And although the connections to the state intelligence agencies are clear and obvious, Darktrace is officially a completely private enterprise with big investors including KKR, Summit Partners, Vitruvian Partners, Samsung Ventures, TenEleven Ventures, Hoxton Ventures, Talis Capital, Invoke Capital and Insight Venture Partners. Sitting alongside the controversial Dr. Mike Lynch OBE on the advisory board for Darktrace are some seriously influential people deeply connected to US and UK intelligence agencies.
One of the first members appointed to Darktrace’s advisory board was Jonathan Evans, also referred to as Baron Evans of Weardale. Evans was previously the Director General of MI5, taking over from Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller in 2007 and staying in the most senior intelligence role that the UK has to offer until 2013. After his time as head of MI5, Evans initially joined HSBC Holdings as a non-executive Director, a role he also took up at Ark, a highly secure UK data centre.
If you were to walk into the advisory boardroom at Darktrace, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were actually attending a U.K. Home Office meeting from the past. The former Home Secretary under Prime Minister Theresa May, Amber Rudd, became part of Darktrace after her time in government ended in 2019. She is also on the advisory team of Teneo, a consulting firm co-founded and led by Doug Band, the former advisor to Bill Clinton and close friend of the infamous Jeffrey Epstein. As always, when investigating the murky world of intelligence, many connections to Epstein and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell are revealed.
With that being said, yet another member of Darktrace’s advisory board also has Epstein/Maxwell links. The C.I.A. stalwart, Alan Wade, is one of the most interesting members of the Darktrace advisory team. He was announced as joining their growing advisory board on 10 May 2016 and had been the former Chief Information Officer of the Central Intelligence Agency. His thirty- five year career at the top echelons of the C.I.A. ended in 2006 and afterwards he would dedicate his time to assisting companies with C.I.A. links from the private sector.
While he had been at one of the top posts in the entire U.S. intelligence community, Wade co-founded Chiliad alongside Ghislaine Maxwell’s sister, Christine Maxwell. As Unlimited Hangout reported earlier this year, Christine Maxwell was personally involved in leading the opeartions of the front company used by Robert Maxwell to market the PROMIS software, which had a backdoor for Israeli intelligence, to both the U.S.’ public and private sectors. Given this history, it is certainly telling that Wade would choose to co-found a major software company with Christine Maxwell of all people.
When it was still active as a company, Chiliad described itself as “the leader in data analysis across clouds, agencies, departments and other stovepipes” and it ran on the computers and databases of nearly every major national security system in the U.S. government. But nowadays, its defunct website gives us just the standard error message.
Rounding out the Darktrace advisory board is their token academic, Professor Nick Jennings CB FREng, who serves the Vice-Provost for Research and Enterprise at Imperial College London. Yet, Jennings has also been the U.K. ‘s Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor for National Security and is currently a member of the U.K. government’s AI council, a very convenient position to hold given Darktrace’s ambitions.
These characters that comprise Darktrace’s leadership and board stand ready to put forward a solution to all of our problems related to cybersecurity. You can simply install a box and let Darktrace care for your network, placing your trust in an A.I. approaching self-awareness that is managed by intelligence-linked individuals with questionable pasts all for peace of mind and “convenience.” But what will they be fighting?

Cybereason – From Offensive, State-Sponsored Hackers to A.I. Cybersecurity

As we have experienced at other memorable moments in history, coincidental simulations prior or during any intelligence agency led manipulated event are commonplace. On this occasion, a company named Cybereason is here to provide us with a short glimpse of our pending fearful futures. In multiple simulations Cybereason has run over the last few years, they have been gaming out how potential cyberattacks could cause unthinkable disaster for the U.S. 2020 election.
Cybereason’s CEO and co-founder is an enigmatic former Israeli Intelligence agent Lior Div-Cohen, often simply referred to as Lior Div. Div, an IDF Medal of Honor recipient and former Israeli Unit 8200 member, co-founded Cybereason in 2012 alongside Yossi Naar and Yonatan Striem-Amit, who are also fellow veterans of Israel’s military cybersecurity corps. A scholar from the Academic College of Tel-Aviv, Lior Div afterwards worked as a software engineer for Xacct a network service provider followed by the notorious firm Amdocs, which was accused of eavesdropping on American government officials on behalf of Israel. In between Amdocs and Cybereason, Lior Div was the CEO and co-founder of Israeli cybersecurity firm AlfaTech which is described in its national media as “a cybersecurity services company for Israeli government agencies.”
Cybereason, in a bizarre advert promoting a fictional product they called Cyberblast, described themselves as “the leader in endpoint protection, offering endpoint detection and response, next-generation antivirus, and managed monitoring services powered by paradigm-shifting, military-grade technology leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning.” The marketers at Cybereason have gone all out to show themselves as a Silicon Valley style start-up where they spend all their days cooking, drinking, dancing, and doing barely any work, but in reality it is a company partially owned by such defence giants such as Lockheed Martin and who have very close ties to the Israeli intelligence apparatus. Through their partnership with Lockheed Martin, Cybereason now his its A.I.-driven cybersecurity software running on some of the U.S. government’s most classified networks, including numerous, critical U.S. military systems.
Yet, it’s not only major weapons developers like Lockheed Martin who have invested in this hi-tech cybersecurity platform. Reuters reported in August 2019 that Japanese firm Softbank has invested previously in the company, along with venture capital firms CRV and Spark Capital. Spark Capital’s investment portfolio includes Twitter, Oculus, Wayfair, Coinbase, Plaid, among many other big players. CRV’s investments include Dropbox, Patreon, but also A.I. and machine learning related enterprises such as Standard Cognition and Dyno Therapeutics.
As with Darktrace, Cybereason offers what is described as a next generation antivirus technology which, instead of responding to attacks when detected, will use A.I. and machine learning to see abnormalities to a network’s usual processes in real time.
Some of the simulations that Cybereason have hosted over the past two years lead us to election day. In a video entitled: 2018 -10 Hacking the Vote from a scenario and simulation which was actually entitled Blackout; Protect the Vote, the simulation examines which parts of an election day processes were vulnerable to hackers. They make clear from the start it won’t be all about voting machines themselves.

Operation Blackout

Nolandia, the fictional city which was ground zero during Operation Blackout, was based on an average American city nestled within a crucial swing state on election day. Here in Nolandia, three teams of cyber-fighters would battle with each other over control of the city.
These would be the three teams each with succinct roles in the polling day pretence, as told to us by Cybereason’s Ross Rustici and Sam Curry:
Red Team AKA Broken Eagle Task Force: The basic aim of the Broken Eagle’s Task Force was to disrupt the election processes in real time. The Red’s approach evolved throughout the simulation from causing as much harm as they could into making the result of the election as in doubt and politically biased as possible. They attempted to control the narrative that the system was broken and that the elections could not be trusted.
Blue Team AKA Nolandia Event Task Force: The Blue’s were fundamentally reactive during the simulation and were constantly on the backfoot. The Blue’s, responding to a reported gas leak at a Nolandia polling station early in the scenario, contacted the Secretary of State’s office to ask whether they needed to close the polling station. Luckily, the real State Department had two advisors sitting in on the simulation who were able to offer alternative contingency plans that existed in real world America. By the end of the simulation, the Blue’s were all aware that they had largely failed the exercise.
White Team AKA White Control Team: This team acted as support to give advice or permission to either team, in a role very much like the Dungeon Master in a D&D game. The White’s main task was to balance the realism of the scenario and create problems for either team that they’d experience in the real world.
In November 2019, Cybereason re-ran their election day attack simulation at an event in Washington D.C. and have run multiple simulations over the last year. The last imagined American city was called Adversaria. As the election day creeps ever closer, Cybereason have been releasing it’s more well produced promo videos online. If you’re paying very close attention then you will have noticed that Cybereason have spent all of October 2020 marketing heavily as their big day approaches. Representatives of Cybereason are being quoted in every mainstream scare story out there.
Vice News released an article on 7 October entitled: “Hospitals Have Become ‘Prime Targets’ for Crippling Ransomware Attacks,” where they quote Israel Barak, Cybereason’s Chief Information Security Officer, the article states that Barak is “a cyber warfare expert at Cybereason, spent nine years in the Israel Defence Forces specialising in cyber defence systems.” And when Computer Weekly’s Adam Scroxton, on 20 October, was reporting on the conviction of the six supposed Russian hackers in the famous NotPetya attack, Cybereason rolled out their CSO, Sam Curry, to give a statement.
In a 5 minute video released by the channel Freethink, released on 21 October 2020, entitled Hacker’s Simulate Election Day Blackout, Sam Curry, Cybereason’s Chief Security Officer, speaks openly about the possibilities of election day interference happening in the coming Presidential showdown. “No-one has seen an election like we expect the 2020 Presidential Election to be,” says Curry, “the stakes are high for 2020. Frankly, this is the game to win.”
In a Wired article on 22 October titled: 12 Cyber Threats That Could Wreak Havoc on the Election, Wired explains: “The security firm Cybereason last year ran a series of tabletop exercises specifically looking at how real-world attacks might impact Election Day. One exercise focused on a hacktivist group—known in the exercise as “Kill Organized Systems (K-OS),” pun intended—that disrupted traffic lights and brought the election to a standstill by paralyzing the city’s transportation system.” The media appearances for Cybereason have never come so thick and fast as they have this past October. One could even assume that these appearances are a media campaign leading up towards a big event.
And then, on 26 October 2020, Cybereason released a new promo video entitled: “We are the Defenders. The first to your fight.” In the two-minute piece, a Hollywood-esque movie intro narrator is accompanied by a CGI killer robot owl, with knives for wings and evil glowing eyes. They’re obviously looking to project their image as one of the wise, old protectors of cyberspace, or maybe something much worse. Regardless of the reason for the killer robot owls, Cybereason are sinister enough without them.

The Usual Suspects

Cybereason also has links to one of the usual suspects, Brigadier Pinchas Buchris. The former Deputy Commander of an elite IDF operations unit and former Commander of the IDF 8200 Cyber Intelligence Unit, he was also Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, CEO of Oil Refineries Ltd and also serves as an AIPAC board member. This high flying Israeli intelligence operative joined the board of Cybereason shortly after his time spent at Carbyne911. Carbyne, an Israeli 911 call platform which saw initial investment from Jeffrey Epstein, Nicole Junkermann, and Peter Thiel, was founded by Ehud Barak and other ex Israeli intelligence giants.
Carbyne911 is an excellent example of how Israeli intelligence companies are trying to subvert and infiltrate our current systems. And since my initial article exposing their sinister team of ex-Unit 8200 members in 2019, Carbyne has had to change nearly every member of their advisory board. Now, the members chosen to be on their board are nearly all ex-American intelligence and state representatives with barely a Unit 8200 member anywhere in sight. This was an obvious attempt to distance the company from Israeli intelligence and steamroll on towards their aim to be in control of the private data of every American. Carbyne911 have been pushing to be involved in the Covid-19 track and trace apps as well as continuing to try and take over the American emergency services communication infrastructure. The people now occupying these positions at Carbyne911 will be examined in greater detail on another day.
Darktrace, Cybereason and Carbyne911 aren’t simply pioneers in a fast moving tech sector. Rather, they are intrinsically linked to the same old intelligence agencies who are attempting to reinvent themselves under a different, more acceptable guise. They are creating the infrastructure designed to subvert our current systems. An unsupervised A.I. behemoth that will require as much data as possible to power and our governments have already agreed to give away everything they can.
All of these technologies must be thought about, not only in relation to just an election day cyber-attack or a terrorist event, but instead think of this in its original and larger context. The Cambridge mathematicians behind the creation of Darktrace weren’t originally looking to prevent a cyberattack on election day 2020. These high flying math geniuses were trying to create the singularity, the creation of self learning A.I. This advancing technology will soon be fed with more data sets than the human brain is capable of imagining. In a move to take self learning A.I. online, the cyber threat to the elections will just be a smoke screen to avoid the larger more pertinent public policy questions concerning the safety and ethics of unsupervised self learning A.I., and more importantly, the major risks attached to these unknown systems.
The companies holding this all powerful future tech no longer bother to hide their associations and allegiances. Their various companies are riddled with American, British, and Israeli intelligence agents who plan on using this kind of technology to target their own populations. It is no coincidence then that some of these same nations have been covertly working on developing an A.I. that would replace human hackers, automating the very threat that companies like Darktrace and Cybereason claim to be guarding us against.

2020.10.27 20:03 JacobZivotic 21m looking for a female :)

Hey my name is Jacob, looking for a Christin woman. I’m not super concerned about age difference. I live in Alaska 🤷‍♂️.
Brief intro - I’m a non-dominational Christian who believes in the Trinity and that Jesus died and rose again in order to conquer death/sin to restore humankind’s relationship with God if we chose to accept that gift.
I enjoy outdoor activities, I’m into fitness but I’m not jacked or anything. I’m working on getting abs but that will probably be forever from now 😂.
I’m a vegan but I’m okay if my partner was not. I was pretty overweight before and I started to take my health more seriously. Figured I should exercise more and eat better, tried out veganism and it made me feel amazing!
I have a 2 year college degree that pretty much amounts to nothing haha. Just an AA degree. Im not sure what I want to do with my life yet, but I’d love to take some time off from work and travel once I get married. I have a full time job, I’m responsible with money, and I like dogs :D
I do some gaming too, so if you’d like to get to know me better through gaming as well as chatting, I’m totally down. Leave a comment or pm

No one knew Epstein’s secrets like Ghislaine Maxwell; how much did her testimony reveal?
By Ben Wieder and Kevin G. Hall Miami Herald
(TNS) Oct 20, 2020 Updated 4 hrs ago
WASHINGTON — When a 418-page transcript of a deposition given by Ghislaine Maxwell is made public, perhaps by week’s end, it will mark a major milestone in a legal fight by the Miami Herald to reveal Jeffrey Epstein’s protected world by shining light in uncomfortable places.
Maxwell — the alleged madam to the late disgraced financier — sits in a New York jail awaiting a July trial date, denied bail on federal sex trafficking charges and considered a flight risk. She sought to block release of the lengthy April 2016 deposition, arguing it would hurt her defense in separate criminal proceedings.
Late Tuesday, her lawyers sought yet again to delay the deposition release, saying they were “still considering whether to seek any further emergency appellate remedies” or whether they would share any additional information to try to sway the judge.
After a flurry of court filings, the parties were told late Tuesday that the deposition would be released by 9 a.m. EDT Thursday morning in New York. The parties are expected to spend Wednesday fighting over what does or doesn’t get blacked out when released.
U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled in favor of the Herald in July, determining that the public had a right to see many documents in Maxwell’s settled civil suit with Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre. Maxwell appealed, and on Monday the Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit agreed with Preska.
Speaking before the appeals court, the Herald’s attorney, Christine Walz, a partner at Holland & Knight, argued that the documents shouldn’t have been kept from the public in the first place.
“The judicial documents at issue involve matters of the utmost public importance — accusations of sex trafficking of young girls for years at the hands of the wealthy and powerful, that have been kept secret for far too long,” she said.
Given the nature of the allegations that triggered the civil lawsuit, the deposition is likely to provide much greater detail about the scope of the alleged sex trafficking by Epstein and Maxwell, both in how Maxwell answered or did not.
The transcript’s release has generated buzz because of the wealthy and powerful men in Maxwell and Epstein’s orbit. President Donald J. Trump recently made headlines because rather than disavow Maxwell he remembered her fondly from his Palm Beach days and wished her well. Trump and others were in Epstein’s now-infamous black book of acquaintances.
Epstein and Maxwell were also close to former President Bill Clinton, who appeared more than two dozen times in flight manifests for Epstein’s jet, dubbed the Lolita Express.
Former Colombian President Andres Pastrana flew on the Lolita Express. Ex-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak visited Epstein’s New York mansion. Giuffre alleges she was pimped by Maxwell and Epstein to England’s Prince Andrew, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz. All three men deny that.
A photo showing Giuffre, Maxwell and the prince together — with Andrew’s arm around Giuffre’s bare midriff — has been widely published.
The Maxwell deposition is unlikely to deal directly with those figures, although they could appear in other documents to be released, such as depositions from others who gave sworn testimony and are asking that their names not be made public.
Epstein might still be alive and thriving if not for the Herald’s “Perversion of Justice” series in November 2018 that spotlighted the deal that allowed him to avoid federal prosecution. The U.S. attorney who inked the arrangement that allowed Epstein to only face lesser state charges was Alexander Acosta. He went on to be Trump’s labor secretary until resigning in July 2019, shortly after Epstein was arrested anew but on federal charges.
To say that there is a lot of expectation surrounding Maxwell’s deposition would be an understatement.
“The Epstein sex trafficking ring is a story of great public interest. Unfortunately, most of the evidence about it — its scope and scale, the hundreds of girls it exploited and abused, the support and protection it had from the rich and the powerful that permitted it to operate for decades, and the failure for years of the courts, prosecutors, and the media to address it — has been hidden behind the curtain of protective orders in two civil cases,” said David Boies, who is representing Epstein accuser Giuffre.
Protective orders are used in lawsuits to protect confidential information, but Boies and other lawyers accuse Maxwell of using such orders after the civil suit with Giuffre was settled in 2017 to hide evidence of crimes.
Boies has worked closely on the case with Sigrid McCawley, a Florida-based partner at his firm.
“Starting in the beginning of 2015, Sigrid and I have probably spent more time on this than anything else we’ve been doing,” Boies said.
Lawyers representing the Herald have asked courts to err on the side of public access, given the protections afforded to Epstein and his wealthy, powerful friends.
“For two years, we pursued this lawsuit because we believed that the secrecy surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and his enablers — dating back to his original deal with U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta — made a mockery of justice. We hope in the future that judges and prosecutors will worry less about protecting wealthy abusers and focus more on those hurt by their egregious behavior,” said Aminda Marques Gonzalez, executive editor of the Herald.
The Herald’s attempts to unseal documents from the civil suit took on greater significance after Maxwell was arrested July 2 at a 156-acre estate in New Hampshire and charged with four counts of sexual trafficking of a minor and two counts of perjury. The latter charges were related to statements she made in the April 2016 deposition.
Maxwell’s team has argued that the deposition was released to federal prosecutors illegally — which federal prosecutors have disputed — and that its public unsealing would jeopardize her chance at a fair trial by potentially tainting future jurors.
Former federal prosecutor David Weinstein doesn’t believe that argument has much merit.
“Quite frankly, there is already a large number of members of the potential jury pool who have pre-judged Maxwell’s guilt — or perhaps her innocence,” he said. “The question for the lawyers during the eventual jury selection process will be can those members of the potential jury pool put aside those notions and decide the case on the facts they see and hear presented in the courtroom.”
Weinstein compared Maxwell’s case to criminal cases against other high-profile people, such as Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, comedian Bill Cosby or Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who have been able to have fair trials in spite of intense media coverage.
And he said he thinks the stakes involving this latest unsealing are actually lower now than when the Herald first successfully sought to unseal Epstein documents in April 2018.
“The stakes were a lot higher when you first went to unseal things because so much was unknown,” he said. “Before she was indicted, what was known about what she did with Epstein was sealed in the proceedings.”
The fight over unsealing Maxwell’s deposition became further entwined with Maxwell’s criminal case when she sought permission to use “critical new material” turned over to her lawyers in the criminal case to bolster her argument for blocking the unsealing of her deposition in the civil case.
The judge in her criminal case, U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan, rejected Maxwell’s plea to use the new material in efforts to prevent the release of the deposition from the settled civil suit. Maxwell appealed Nathan’s decision last month and the appellate court rejected it Monday.
In a two-page order Tuesday, Preska put the parties on notice that she intends to move quickly to release the documents.
“In order to hasten the unsealing process and to avoid any last-minute disputes, the Court advises the parties that the necessary redactions are intended to be as limited in scope as is workable,” the order said, warning the parties that she had little appetite for arguing over whose names are blacked out.

2020.10.18 21:48 infpeachtea My “View From Halfway Down” Dream

I had the strangest dream yesterday reminiscent of “The View from Halfway Down” episode of Bojack Horseman. I’ve really been sick lately having reproductive health issues (pain, prolonged period, ovarian cysts, etc.) so I’ve been contemplating both my fertility (or fearing the possibility of a definitive lack thereof) and my mortality. This dream answered questions surrounding how I felt about life I didn’t know I had.
I fell asleep at about 8PM essentially in the middle of dinner. I remember feeling exhausted from sickness, getting woozy, and lying down. I remember thinking to myself if the crab I had been eating was my last meal I was fine with that and then suddenly I was asleep.
After a period of black, I was at a restaurant one that favored a Marie Calendar’s, Olive Garden, or Cheesecake Factory casual but ornate. The hostess station was different however, it looked like a combination of a movie box office and airport ticket terminal with multiple maitre d’s and a belted line area. there was no one in line, but when I approached the belts I was stopped by a young Latino man (that someone looked like an old roommate who loved to cook I had in college) who offered to take me to my table. I sheepishly followed him.
The restaurant was shaped like a big hollow cylinder. In the middle you could look up and see levels and levels of floors (I assumed more floor just like this one) that went on infinitely above and below us. We walked the circle to my table with the waitehost morphing into other Latino men I’ve known on route past other square booths of people some eating greedily with vigor, some eating shyly and quietly, others emotionally savoring every bite.
I arrived at my table alone and was seated. The spread appeared. Rustic breads, fruits, cheeses, water, and wine. I tasted the bread and thought to myself it was nothing special; I wondered why some of the other patrons had been eating it so graciously. Then I overheard the other patron’s conversations: “I heard there’s going to be a fireworks show!” “I heard there’s a pool party soon!” “I heard there’ll be all sorts of parties all the time!”
I wondered why I hadn’t been informed of the itinerary and then poof I was outside sitting on the grass in the courtyard I assumed was right outside of the restaurant. Across the patch of grass I saw someone I recognized, my old manager from my last job “Ellie” who I always felt was micromanagey but in a passive-aggressive sort of way so I didn’t really care for her as a boss. I was often venting to my boyfriend saying “like what does she want from me! I never know exactly what she wants from me! I wish she’d just come out with it!” so I became stressed even looking at her.
She fake gasped seeing me in a small-talk fashion and then waved me over, another thing I hate people assuming you don’t want to be alone and then taking away the option. I hesitated and then joined her. She small talked for a moment before becoming more serious sounding. This is the point where the communication became something less (but also somehow more) than verbal.
She said what I can only translate as “you owe me” to which I replied “how great?” and she gave me an amount. I felt inadequate and anxious and then poof I was transported. This time I was at my final college apartment before I graduated and moved in with my partner.
I had lived in that apartment complex throughout college but moved units depending on subletting situations. By chance, the apartment I lived in last I had lived in twice as a freshman and as senior. As a freshman I lived there for winter break with older college girls since we could not stay in the dorms and the later I moved there immediately after my least favorite roommate experience in college. Both times I was there I felt free, especially relative to the dorms or my previous senior year apartment.
I walked from the street outside straight into the townhouse. The door was unlocked. It was empty, but did not give off the energy of a place that had been empty for long. The kitchen was dirty and the only item in the entirety of the bottom level were a pair of my old roommate’s shoes in the dining room that we had converted into his bedroom. I went upstairs and first brushed my teeth until they bled in the bathroom.
After that I went into what had been my bedroom and it was a nursery. It was a maximalist nursery with blue walls and coordinating primary color toys and decor. I looked for a baby. I picked up toys and they were new and expensive looking; I picked up books and they were old and had been mine. Finally, with Goodnight Moon in hand, I saw a deep tall crib and a figure in it that could have been a baby or a blanket but was obscured. I decided I did not wish to know and was creeped out so I ran down the stairs out of the house.
As soon as i was outside Ellie was casually turning the corner to my block. She looked amused that I was so afraid and lazily tried to give off the impression she just happened to be in the neighborhood. I started to explain I didn’t have what she asked of me and she calmly cut me off. She said (again translating from a non-verbal communication) that if I was unsure what she wanted, me attempting to give it to her would always in vein.
She then gave a little wave and kept walking. At this point I didn’t know what to do. I walked aimlessly in the apartment complex looking for something that would make sense. I saw my least favorite apartment. I, an introvert, had lived with six people much more extroverted than I who idealized a How I Met Your MotheFriends/New Girl style living situation. I was uncomfortable with having that many people in my business and the associated messy social politics and thus I was always stand-offish which was then met with a catty saccharine hostility. Passive-aggressive prison. I’ve always thought if hell was personalized like in AHS: Coven it would be living there with them again and their veiledly threatening, conditional cordiality.
When i was in front of the apartment I got the feeling the door was unlocked and I could explore it like I had the other one. Without second thought I knew I had no wish to and I continue to aimlessly walk around. I felt as though I was out of bounds because the world I was in began to lack detail (akin to being out of range in a sandbox video game).
Then I heard it. Their voices. The voices of my old roommates. All of them as if I was back on the living room couch, social battery depleted, in the middle of them conversing extrovertedly. “Does anyone want a bagel?” “What movie is that?” “Laughter” “Oh my God! You’re so crazy! Haha!” “I’m going to the store does anyone want anything?” “I’m going to the gym later does anyone want to come?” I wanted it to stop.
The more uncomfortable I got the more it felt like my very solar plexus was being pulled towards the townhouse with the voices only getting louder and more sinister sounding. I resisted. I can’t explain how as being mentally or physically, but equivalent to digging your nails into the ground as you’re being dragged. Finally I verbally yelled “No!” and poof I was back at the restaurant.
The restaurant had changed from something kitschy and ornate like a Cheesecake Factory to something minimalist and self-important like a gentrified cafe. The walls were white, the tables were barnwood and seated at one of them was my middle school friend’s older sister “Christine” but as I first met her, a high schooler. She was tinkering with pieces of toys.
Christine I always found a particularly interesting person. In middle school we were afraid of her. She was in JROTC and had a very outwardly racist white boyfriend despite her being mixed Asian and Latino. She would passionately regurgitate his views (mainly unabashed eugenics) and on occasion called me a nigger to my face. Then, suddenly, after high school she had an older (twice her age) Jewish boyfriend and was a Hillary Clinton neoliberal who often would morally high stand against me, three years her junior, with the same aggressive pseudo-intellectual confidence she had as a teenage eugenicist.
Despite how I resented her worldview she toted as being “unbiased” and based in “facts, logic, and reason rather than emotion” I always envied her self-assuredness. It felt impossible to argue with her; I had lived experience and empathy but she had book smarts and the confidence to be blatantly self-serving. I was no match for her and throughout our time of knowing each other I saw that as my defect, not our general incompatibility.
But there she was in this restaurant turned minimalist gentrifier restaurant as I felt lost and confused. I knew upon seeing she was the only person in the room I’d be offered no warmth or comfort in my confusion. I asked her a series of questions as she tinkered and aged. None of the answers were satisfying and I began to feel alone.
I often tell my partner he is home to me. I tell him he is a constant and often the only thing that makes sense in my life when all else feels like chaos. As Christine aged to how I’d assume she looks currently and appeared to be finishing the project she was tinkering with I knew I only had one question left. I demanded “I want Alexander” and she looked up, now older than me again giving off the air of superiority she always did.
She had finished what she was working on, a black cube, which was now in one piece on an otherwise empty table. “Where’s Alexander?” She looked at me with frigid, biting condescension and sneered “You don’t get it? He’s alive.” cranked, pressed her box and disappeared.
I panicked. Why aren’t I able to build the necessary box and leave this place? Why am I inadequate? Why was I always inadequate? Am I dead?
The questions raced through my head and I began to lose myself, hyperventilate, and become off balance. Finally a thought appeared in my head, it felt foreign as if it was being communicated to me, but also came from within in my own voice.
I can only translate it as “do you want an end (vague) to this (vague)?” and I thought for only a moment before answering in the affirmative and startling awake all at once. It was a little before midnight. I stumbled into the kitchen and downed my expensive guilty pleasure chocolate milk that I usually ration and savor straight from the bottle. I realized what I had been asked for and in what amount.
“Enough life”.

2020 has hit the people where it creates the most destruction, our small business. One would think that everyone would see the effects due to job loses, the small and medium companies are fighting to stay afloat paying their bills, but not walmart. They have been increasing their wealth by 123% compared to 2019.
During a lock down essential services, l do realize that their needs to be food stores included. However their is no reason to keep stores open that carry anything from food, furniture, clothing, camping, automotive, etc... In theory this sound good except the fact that only food is classified as essentials.
All of the local food store that just handle food are told to close their doors, this behaviour is just plain bias.
We see that our leaders lock down the country, for what ever reason they feel we need to know changing from day to day. We seem to listen to the government news and believe them with no hard facts.
The people have been herded into the direction of the 5 monster entities, all of the others must be shut down because of the fear of dying. Here are some facts from Walmart web site, the numbers are sickening.
Walmart annual net income for 2020 was $14.881B, a 123.1% increase from 2019.

Maybe it is time to ask questions about the pre-meditated destruction of our lives, but are scared or just plain not wanting to be properly informed.
Every item purchase at Walmart helps bankrupt another local business. How do we sleep at night? As a global citizen, we are concerned about the negative consequences of climate change and believe governments, industry, and consumers all have a role to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. We are committed to doing our part by focusing our efforts in the following areas:

  1. Reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from our own operations through:
    1. Driving energy efficiency measures throughout our facilities
    2. Transitioning energy sources toward lowezero carbon alternatives
    3. Driving more energy-efficient modes of transporting finished products
  2. We will help consumers to reduce their own GHG emissions through the use of our products via:
    1. Product and packaging innovations that enable more efficient consumer product use and energy consumption
    2. Consumer education to reduce GHG emissions such as the benefits of using cold water for machine washing
  3. Work with partners across our value chain to ensure responsible sourcing of agricultural commodities that are known to be associated with deforestation risks (e.g. palm oil, wood pulp).
  4. Work with our suppliers to identify meaningful opportunities to reduce our Scope 3 emissions
We will share progress on our overall climate change efforts, including reporting our Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions and progress against our goals, via our annual Citizenship Report.

Real Canadian Superstore is a chain of supermarkets owned by Canadian food retailing giant Loblaw Companies. Its name is often shortened to Superstore.
Originating in Western Canada in the late 1970s/early 1980s, the banner expanded into Ontario in the early 2000s as Loblaw attempts to fend off competition from department stores including U.S.-based Walmart.
Loblaw Companies Limited is the largest Canadian food retailer, encompassing corporate and franchise supermarkets operating under 22 regional and market segment banners (including Loblaws), as well as pharmacies, banking and apparel.[3] Loblaw operates a private label program that includes grocery and household items, clothing, baby products, pharmaceuticals, cellular phones, general merchandise, and financial services. Google doesn't need an introduction about their control of the flow of information. We are mostly aware of the connections to the powerful on the planet.
These entities would be in line to supply all of the peoples needs their masters in control of coarse.
It is 2020 and one year ago we had no idea of what 2020 will bring. How many citizens of society knew this was coming? A very small percentage.
For the general population their vision is to supply only what they decide what we require, to keep making them richer. The next 5 years will show what they feel we need, this will not include eating out, having out door gatherings as well as in doors. Mostly everything we took for granted in 2019 will be erased by 2025. One might say this is a conspiracy theory, let me remind you that in 2019 we said being stopped from work, and kids not in school was impossible. Look at us now.

2020.10.12 20:42 jonisantucho Oscar Watch - Post Venice/TIFF/NYFF Edition

Several months ago, right after the last Academy Awards, I posted a long, long, long list of possible contenders that had prospects to fight for the next Oscars. It was a time of hope, of looking forward, and of positivity.
Then, COVID-19 happened.
And now, we find ourselves in a year that may change the movie industry forever, with the lack of safety of theaters in times of a pandemic accelerating the switch of mainstream audiences to streaming and VOD. These are times where some people are beginning to wonder, even after they pushed the eligibility date for two more months, why the Academy doesn’t cancel next year’s Oscars. And in this rocky terrain, we lost many contenders. Fire up the Hunger Games cannons, because these are some casualties of the season (so far).
Launched to 2021: Annette, Benedetta, Deep Water, Dune, In the Heights, King Richard, Last Night in Soho, Memoria, Nightmare Alley, Passing, Red, White and Water, Raya and the Last Dragon, The Last Duel, The Power of the Dog, Tick, Tick… Boom!, West Side Story.
Unknown status / missing in action: After Yang, Blonde, Breaking News in Yuba County, C’mon C’mon, Next Goal Wins, Stillwater, The French Dispatch, The Humans, The Tragedy of Macbeth, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Those Who Wish Me Dead.
But even if this year isn’t as loaded with clear awards candidates, there are plenty of movies that are already drawing buzz for an Oscar season that started brewing a month ago, with the kickoff of the Venice Film Festival, and will go on for six and a half more months, when the Academy Awards take place on April 25, 2021. It’s gonna be a long, weird and rocky season, which is gonna be great to see in terms of the narratives that are coming up.
-Ammonite (trailer): When people were betting on the likelier contenders of this year, many people pointed in the direction of Francis Lee’s period drama, with previous Best Actress winner Kate Winslet and constant nominee Saoirse Ronan. Going into the premiere at Toronto, people had their eyes set in this queer romance between a paleontologist and a young wife in the coasts of England during the 19th century. But then, some things happened. First, Winslet started her promotion of the movie by talking about her regret for working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski that sounded unconvincing to the ominous Film Twitter. Then, another queer period drama, Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, started to take the attention away at Venice. And finally, the movie premiered. The reaction? Cold. Critics came out mixed with the movie, with many of them comparing it negatively to last year’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and saying that it’s too dull and alienating. Does that mean that all is lost? Not exactly. While the movie (which, considering the genre, really needs critics' support to get into the Best Picture category) has been dismissed, the acting by Winslet and Ronan has been received positively. Now that so many other contenders have been dropping out of the year, they might get some room to campaign from a (social) distance.
-Another Round (trailer): Speaking of TIFF premieres, a film that had a better time at the Canadian festival was the reunion between director Thomas Vinterberg and star Mads Mikkelsen, who reunited years after making the stirring drama The Hunt (not the one with Betty Gilpin carrying a bad political satire, the one about a Danish teacher wrongly accused of sexual abuse). This time, the material is lighter, being a dramedy about four teachers who decide to test out a theory about how people can live and work a little better if they increase the level of alcohol in their blood. Critics really liked the way the movie dealt with alcoholism, and Toronto audiences made it a runner up for the People’s Choice Award of the festival. In a year without so much exposure from other festivals, this Cannes 2020 selection could make a candidate for the Best International Film category.
-Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (trailer): Surprise, new Borat film! While Sacha Baron Cohen made headlines several times this year because of stunts that people assumed were about a second season of Who is America?, the Internet was shocked when, in early September, it was confirmed that it was actually a very niiiiice return from the journalist character that made him famous, shot during quarantine. In a matter of weeks after the reveal, the sequel got sold to Amazon Prime and got a release date for October 23. Why so soon? Well, apparently the movie, which got him in trouble with Rudy Giuliani and other people, is about Borat taking his daughter on a road trip to give her as a bride to VP Mike Pence. Even if this movie doesn’t manage to achieve the feats of the 2006 movie (which got a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, let’s remember), it will help Baron Cohen’s image a lot, because it will come a week after his big Oscar play.
-Cherry: While everybody knows them mostly because of their contributions to the MCU, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and actor Tom Holland are trying to branch out together. Now Apple has bought into their efforts, paying more than 40 million dollars to acquire their new crime drama, about the life of former Army medic Nico Walker, who started robbing banks after his days in Iraq left him with PTSD and a pill addiction. Will Holland manage this time to escape from the shadow of “oh, jeez, Mr. Stark” Spider-Man before Chaos Walking or the Uncharted movie come out? That’s a question for another day.
-Da 5 Bloods (trailer): Talk about timing. Merely days after the country was mobilized by the police brutality that continues to divide the United States, Spike Lee premiered his new war drama on Netflix. In a vibrant, disjointed but passionate portrait of four African American veterans who return to Vietnam to search for their fallen leader and some treasure, Lee struck gold yet again with his usual fans, even though the moving of the Oscar ceremony threatened to make it harder to remind Academy voters about this movie. However, with an astounding performance from Delroy Lindo (who is confirmed to be campaigned in the Best Actor category) and a supporting turn from Chadwick Boseman which got reframed with the news of his bravery in life and death, this has what it takes to fight for a spot in the Best Picture lineup.
-Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (trailer): When it became clear that quarantine wasn’t gonna be a breeze, the first movie in consideration wise enough to move a little further ahead in the calendar was this adaptation of the hit West End production about a gay British teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen and get his family and schoolmates to accept his sexuality. With a release date on February 26, 20th Century Studios (man, it’s weird to not use Fox in that name) hopes to strike gold, with a cast that mixes young unknowns, familiar names (Sharon Horgan, Sarah Lancashire and my boy Ralph Ineson) and the previously nominated legend that is Richard E. Grant (who is playing a former drag queen named Loco Chanelle), now taking advantage of the move of other musicals like Annette, In The Heights and West Side Story. I mean, this has at the very least some Golden Globes nods in the bag.
-French Exit: Before its premiere as the closing film of the NYFF, many pundits were expecting this surreal comedy to be somewhat of a comeback for past Best Actress nominee Michelle Pfeiffer, who here plays a close to penniless widow who moves to Paris with her son (Lucas Hedges) and cat, who also happens to be her reincarnated husband (Tracy Letts). However, the first reactions for the film adaptation of the Patrick deWitt novel were all over the place, with some people feeling cold by the execution of the weirdness and others being won over. Still, everybody had good things to say about Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance, but after the mixed reception to the rest of Azazel Jacobs’ film she really would need a lot of critics support to get anywhere near the Best Actress category. With a release date on February 12, it seems that Sony Pictures Classics is skipping the critics awards, and the distributor has a couple of big competitors above this one.
-Good Joe Bell: Every year, there are movies with big stars that go to festivals full of hope for praises and awards. Some of them work and go on, others don’t and get forgotten about. Mark Wahlberg tried to remind people that he occasionally is a good actor with a true life drama where he plays a father who decides to walk across America to raise awareness about bullying after his son, tormented for being gay, commits suicide. The film by Reinaldo Marcus Green premiered at TIFF, and the reaction was… not great. Some critics defended it, but most saw it as a flawed, baity product starring a man with a history of hate. Still, it got bought by a distributor: Solstice Studios, a new player in the game which just released its first movie, Unhinged (yup, the one about Russell Crowe road raging). While they paid 20 million dollars for Good Joe Bell, it’s clear that this won’t get near the Oscar telecast.
-Hillbilly Elegy: While many movies this year have some level of anticipation, Film Twitter is bracing for this movie in the “is this gonna be the next Green Book?” way. Ron Howard’s adaptation of J.D. Vance’s memoir about his low income life in a poor rural community in Ohio has many fearing about the overuse of tropes involving what’s called white trash porn, but rarely, Netflix has kept silent about this release. Even though it has Oscar bridesmaids Glenn Close (7 nominations) and Amy Adams (6 nominations), the streamer has not even released a photo of the movie, which supposedly will come out in November. And if you want another bad omen, take a look at the lower levels of this list by a familiar voice.
-I’m Thinking of Ending Things (trailer): Speaking of Netflix, did you know that there is a new Charlie Kaufman there, right now? While his adaptation of the dark novel by Iain Reid, seemingly about a woman (Jessie Buckley) who is taken by her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis), got the usual reception of confusion and praise that follows his movies, the release was followed for what befalls most of the Netflix original movies: a couple of days in the Top 10, and then it fell into the void. While Buckley and Plemons deliver great work in this demented, melancholic story, it’s hard to see this movie getting anything else than a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Charlie. And that’s a long shot.
-I’m Your Woman: Following the little seen but critically acclaimed Miss Stevens and Fast Color, Julia Hart started 2020 with a Disney+ adaptation of the YA book Stargirl, and now she follows it with a drama for Amazon that will have its world premiere as the opening film of the AFI fest on October 15. In this movie, Rachel Brosnahan hopes to translate her TV success with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to the big screen, playing a woman in the ‘70s that has to go on the run with her kid due to her husband’s crimes.
-Judas and the Black Messiah (trailer): Even if this doesn’t end up winning any awards, it has a real shot at being the best trailer of 2020. Formerly titled Jesus Was My Homeboy, this biographical drama by Shaka King tells the tale of two men: Fred Hampton (Kaluuya), an activist and Black Panther leader, and William O’Neal (Stanfield), the FBI agent sent to infiltrate the party and arrest him. While the trailer for this movie promised a release “only in theaters”, we shall see if Warner Bros backs down from that fight.
-Let Them All Talk: While we’re on the subject of Warner Bros, we have to mention what’s happening with HBO Max. While the start of the streaming service hasn’t been good (I mean, there are still people confused about that name) and it lead to some people assume will cause many firings, it has begun to make some buzzed titles on TV, like Close Enough, Raised by Wolves and the remains of the DC Universe failed streaming service. Now, to make a mark in the movie business, the streamer has a new Steven Soderbergh movie, a comedy that stars Meryl Streep as a celebrated author that takes her friends (Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest) and her nephew (Lucas Hedges) in a cruise to find fun and come to terms with the past, while he flirts with a literary agent (Gemma Chan). While it doesn’t have a date yet, it’s confirmed to release in 2020, and at least we know that it can’t be worse than The Laundromat.
-Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: While the expectations for the next film adaptation of an August Wilson acclaimed play were already high, the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman made this Netflix release one of the most anticipated movies of the season, considering this is his final movie. While past Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis takes the lead playing blues singer Ma Rainey in this tale of a heated recording session with her bandmates, her agent and her producer in 1927, Chadwick Boseman has a turn as the trumpeter Levee that was already being considered for awards, and now has even more people waiting to see. The thing is that one of the biggest competitions for Boseman this year will be Boseman himself, for his already acclaimed supporting turn on Da 5 Bloods, also released by Netflix. While the streamer will have to decide which of Chadwick’s performances will get the bigger campaign, this film by director George C. Wolfe has a cushy date set for December 18, and Viola is gunning hard for this movie to win.
-Mank (trailer): As you may have noticed by now, Netflix has a lot of plates spinning around this season, and this is the big one. After befriending the service with House of Cards and Mindhunter, David Fincher is going black and white to tackle a script by his late father Jack, about the making of the classic of classics, Citizen Kane. More specifically, the making of the script, with previous Oscar winner Gary Oldman playing the lead role of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, while accompanied by Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton, Charles Dance and Tom Burke. After watching the first trailer of his satire of 1930’s Hollywood (that will release on streaming on December 4), it’s clear that this is gonna be catnip to old Academy voters, and it would be really hard for this to miss the Best Picture line up. Unless it’s a complete cinematic disaster, Mank is bank.
-Minari (trailer): While the last edition of Sundance took place in January, quarantine makes you feel like it took place two years ago. This year, the big winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the US Dramatic Competition was a dramedy by Lee Isaac Chung, about a Korean family in the ‘80s who suddenly gets moved by their father (Steven Yeun) to Arkansas, to start a farm. Even though the reviews have been great, distributor A24 hasn’t really had a big, Oscar nominated hit for the last couple of years, and the COVID-19 crisis made them delay all their releases. But when we were ready to write this off, a new trailer for the movie came out, confirming that it’s in the game of this awards season. Maybe the pandemic will be of help to A24, considering that one of the reasons they haven’t had success is that they divided their attention into too many releases, and ended up getting not much. This time, they are betting all on Lee who, even if this doesn’t go anywhere, also has a new gig coming up as the director of the live action remake of Your Name.
-News of the World (sneak peek): So much of this year has felt like a game of chicken between a virus and movie studios. While many movies chose to skip this year altogether, Universal remains firm (for now) with its plans to open a wide movie on Christmas Day, with a Western that reunites Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks in an enticing premise. In this drama based on Paulette Jiles’ novel, Hanks plays a traveling newsreader in the aftermath of the American Civil War, who is tasked with reuniting an orphaned girl with her living relatives. While the first sneak peek of the movie looks promising, the future is still in the air.
-Nomadland (trailer): While the world burns around Hollywood, Searchlight is betting big on Chloe Zhao’s new film. Using the strategy of taking the spotlight while the rest of the contenders is uncertain about how or when to be released, the indie drama began its journey at Venice, with critics raving about the story of a woman (two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand) who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. At the end of the fest, the movie won the coveted Golden Lion. To put that into perspective, the last three winners of the award were past Best Picture nominees The Shape of Water, Roma and Joker, with The Shape of Water (also distributed by Searchlight) also winning the big prize. After drawing critical acclaim following its virtual showing on TIFF and NYFF, Nomadland seems like the first lock in the Best Picture line up. Still, there are obstacles ahead. Will Zhao break the disappointment of the last few years, when deserving candidates for Best Director got blocked by the likes of Adam McKay and Todd Phillips? And will McDormand manage to get near a third Oscar, following a recent win for Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri? Time will tell.
-On the Rocks (trailer): While she hasn’t been near the Oscars for a while, Sofia Coppola is still a name that draws attention. This time, she opened the NYFF with a dramedy about a young mother (Rashida Jones) who reunites with her playboy father (Bill Murray, also reuniting with Sofia after Lost in Translation) on an adventure through New York to find out if her husband (Marlon Wayans) is cheating on her. The consensus seems to be that, while light and not near her best work, it’s still a fun and breezy movie, with a very good turn by Murray. While many would assume that this A24 production will disappear into the abyss when it releases on Apple TV+ on October 23, the dropping out of many candidates gives the movie a chance to, at least, fight for some Golden Globes.
-One Night in Miami (sneak peek): Following her recent Oscar and Emmy wins for If Beale Street Could Talk and Watchmen, Regina King is still striking hard, and this time, she’s doing it as a director. For her big screen debut as a filmmaker, she chose to adapt Kemp Powers’ play that dramatizes a real meeting on February 25, 1964, when Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree) followed an iconic win with a hangout session with Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). Opening at Venice, the film received glowing reviews, with many praising King (even though some said that the movie doesn’t fully translate the play to the film medium) and the actors’ performances, especially Ben-Adir and Odom Jr. (who, it should be said, also wrote an original song for the end credits of the movie, which could help his Oscar chances). Amazon Prime is hoping that this is their big contender this year, with plans of a theatrical release on Christmas and a streaming release on January 15. Judging by the praise this got at festival season, it has a chance to go a long way.
-Over the Moon (trailer): In a year with not that many contenders for Best Animated Feature, Netflix is betting on a musical adventure directed by the legendary Glen Keane, a classic Disney animator who recently won an Oscar for Best Animated Short for co-directing Dear Basketball. While our expectations were lowered by the first trailer for the movie, centered around a Chinese girl who builds a rocket ship and blasts off to the Moon in hopes of meeting a legendary Goddess, it’s still safe to assume that it has a shot at being nominated for something. Netflix also hopes that you like its big candidate for Best Original Song, which really, really sounds like a Disney ballad.
-Pieces of a Woman: While this year doesn’t have the amount of surprise contenders that a regular Oscar season usually has, we still have some movies that sneaked through festival season. The first one was the new, somber drama by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, known for the doggy uprising pic White God, and the not-so-well-received sci-fi Jupiter’s Moon. This time, we follow a woman (Vanessa Kirby) whose life is torn apart after a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife (Molly Parker) ends in tragedy, and then leads to a court battle that also makes her confront her husband (Shia LaBeouf) and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn). While the movie had mixed reactions, Kirby had plenty of raves in her direction, particularly concerning her performance during a 25-minute birth sequence that is said to be brutal. That brutality paid off, though, because Kirby ended up winning Best Actress at Venice, and Netflix bought the movie, which also has Martin Scorsese as an executive producer. If the Academy wants to crown a new face in the scene, Kirby is the one who will be targeted, following her acclaimed turn in The Crown and her supporting roles in blockbusters like Mission Impossible: Fallout and Hobbs & Shaw.
-Promising Young Woman (trailer): When theaters started to close because of the pandemic, Universal started the push of their movies going straight to VOD, with titles including Trolls World Tour and Never Rarely Sometimes Always. However, there was a title that was supposed to premiere in April, and then suddenly disappeared from existence. It was the directorial debut of actress Emerald Fennell, who wrote a black comedy with touches of a thriller, centered on a woman in her thirties (Carey Mulligan) whose bright future was derailed by a traumatic event, and who’s now looking for revenge. While the reaction to its premiere at Sundance wasn’t enough to consider a Best Picture run, the twisted performance by Mulligan earned her the best praise since the last time she was nominated for an Oscar, a decade ago for An Education. Now, Focus Features is planning to open the movie at Christmas, and are positioning Carey for a run at Best Actress.
-Rebecca (trailer): When the news came out saying that Ben Wheatley would adapt Daphne du Maurier’s psychological thriller novel for Netflix, many were shocked. Some people considered the chance that this was an awards play by the cult director, who is doing the same work that earned Alfred Hitchcock his only Best Picture win. But seeing the trailer for this new version, with Lily James playing the newly married young woman who finds herself battling the shadow of her husband's (Armie Hammer) dead first wife Rebecca, we have to wonder if there’s a point to the existence of this remake. We will find out if there’s any awards chances for this movie on October 21, when it releases on streaming. Let’s hope that Kristin Scott Thomas has something to play with as Mrs. Danvers.
-Respect (trailer): Every year, there’s one or two actors who announce to the world “I want an Oscar” and campaign like their lives depended on it. Last time, it was Taron Egerton (accompanied by Elton John, who actually ended up winning another Oscar). This year, it is the turn of Jennifer Hudson, who is playing Aretha Franklin in a biopic directed by first timer Liesl Tommy, and who’s hoping that this attempt at awards ends up more like Dreamgirls than like Cats. She has been doing announcement trailers (a year in advance), quarantine tributes, award show tributes, and every possible thing to get the industry to notice that she’s playing Aretha. Hey, Rami Malek and Renee Zellweger did it in the last few years, why can’t she. With a release date of January 15, Hudson wants that gold.
-Soul (trailer): Disney may be the studio that suffered the biggest hit because of the pandemic. Their parks are a loss, most of their big productions had to stop because of quarantine, and theaters in many parts of the world are closed. After the failure of Tenet for Warner Bros. and the experiment of the mouse house of charging people 30 dollars to see Mulan (which didn’t work at all), many wondered if Disney was gonna delay the new production by Pixar, written and directed by Pete Docter, who brought Oscar gold to his home with Up and Inside Out. The movie, which centers on a teacher (Jamie Foxx) who dreams of becoming a jazz musician and, just as he’s about to get his big break, ends up getting into an accident that separates his soul from his body, had a lot of promise, but the speculation of lost money was also a concern. Finally, Disney decided to release the movie on Christmas, but only on Disney Plus, causing another failure for theaters, but assuring that Disney at least can get more subscribers to its streaming service. And the movie? Well, it just premiered at the London Film Festival, and the critics are saying it’s Pixar at its best, with praises going from the look, to the script by co-director Kemp Powers (who also wrote the play of One Night in Miami, so he has many chances for a nod), to the score by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste. That means that it’s already a top contender to win Best Animated Feature, and this may not be the only category in which the movie is gonna get nominated.
-Supernova (trailer): If there’s a theme this year in terms of Oscar contenders, it might be dementia. One of the examples of this is a small road movie directed by Hairy Macqueen, which premiered to good reviews at the San Sebastian festival. This drama centers on a trip taken by Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), partners for 20 years, who travel across England reuniting with friends and family, because Tusker was diagnosed with early onset dementia. While usually the big awards role is usually the one of the person who suffers the illnesses, some reviewers are calling Firth’s work as the supporting companion some of the best of his career. With Bleecker Street buying the rights for a US release, this is a little film that could still make some moves.
-Tenet (trailer): For the first five months of quarantine, the big narrative in the world of film was “Christopher Nolan is gonna save cinemas”. But after postponing the release of the mind bending actioner for months on end, creating big demands and expectations to theater owners, and finally releasing as the sacrificial lamb of Hollywood, Warner Bros ended up seeing the opposite effect. Even though Tom Cruise loved to be back at the movies, critics didn’t share enough excitement to make a spy movie that goes backwards worth the possibility of dying of coronavirus. The audiences didn’t show up as much, and those who did attend, mostly complained about the sound mixing and the plot. After all the sacrifice, it’s highly unlikely that Tenet goes beyond technical awards. Let’s start the “Travis Scott for Best Original Song” campaign now, before it’s too late.
-The Boys in the Band (trailer): The Ryan Murphy blank check for Netflix has been interesting to follow. On the one hand, we have his new TV shows, which go from not existing (The Politician), to alternate movie history that doesn’t know how alternate history works (Hollywood), to a challenge of how much TV will you stomach if Sarah Paulson and other middle aged actresses are campy in it (Ratched). And now, we are seeing his producing hand over the movie side, which starts with the new film adaptation of the cult play from 1968, which was already a movie in 1970 and recently jumped to Broadway in 2018. The cast from the recent Broadway production (which includes Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells) stars in Joe Mantello’s movie, telling the story of a group of gay friends in pre-Stonewall New York who reunite for a birthday party and end up revealing a lot of open wounds. While this movie got good reviews from critics, it kinda disappeared without a sound after beginning to stream on Netflix at the end of September. Unless the service wants to campaign for Golden Globes, this film is lost in the algorithm.
-The Devil All the Time (trailer): Another September release on Netflix was the new psychological thriller by Antonio Campos (Simon Killer, Christine) who didn’t manage to continue his streak of intense and terrifying character dramas with his messy adaptation of the dark novel by Donald Ray Pollock. Wasting a cast that includes Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Eliza Scanlen, Bill Skarsgard, Jason Clarke and Riley Keough, this twisted period piece managed to stay for a while in the Top 10, but the reactions from critics were mixed, and audiences were busy asking what was happening with Pattinson’s Southern accent (which with The King makes two years in a row, baby). The many prognosticators who had hopes for an awards play moved on a while ago.
-The Father (trailer): It’s safe to say at this point that Anthony Hopkins is a lock for a Best Actor nomination at the next Oscars. After its premiere in Sundance, every prognosticator pointed in his direction, and for the next few months he swept praise for his harrowing portrayal of an old man grappling with his age as he develops dementia, causing pain to his beleaguered daughter (recent winner Olivia Colman, who also got praised). Sony Pictures Classics will make Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his acclaimed play its big contender of the season, using Hopkins (who this year got a nom for The Two Popes) as a starter to also get Colman, Zeller and the movie nominated.
-The Human Voice (trailer): And speaking of Sony Pictures Classics, it’s almost safe to say that they have another Oscar in the bag this year. That’s because they just bought Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, his English-speaking debut that is an adaptation of the play by Jean Cocteau. In his version (that was acclaimed by critics after premiering in Venice), Tilda Swinton plays the woman waiting at the end of a phone, expecting to hear from his ex-lover who abandoned her. Considering how the competition for Best Live Action Short Film has become somewhat lacking in the last few years (I mean, have you seen Skin), this should be an easy award to win, especially considering how beloved Almodóvar is in the Academy, which nominated him this year for the great Pain and Glory.
-The Life Ahead: While we’re talking about legends, it’s time to talk about Sophia Loren. 16 years after her last leading role in a movie, the Italian icon returns with a drama that was bought by Netflix, who plans to campaign for her as Best Actress and for the movie in the Best International Film category. Directed by Edoardo Ponti (who is also Sophia’s son), this movie centers on a Holocaust survivor who takes in a 12-year-old boy who recently robbed her, in a contemporary adaptation of Romain Gary’s novel The Life Before Us. Netflix has set a date for November 13 to release this movie, and the campaign seems to be about the narrative of seeing Loren winning another Oscar 60 years after she won her first one for Two Women, by Vittorio De Sica.
-The Midnight Sky: Based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight, this collaboration between George Clooney and Netflix is once again making us ask one thing. Are we gonna get the director Clooney of Good Night and Good Luck, or are we gonna get the director Clooney of Leatherheads, The Ides of March, The Monuments Men and Suburbicon? Let’s hope he breaks his streak of blandness with this sci-fi story, which makes us think a little bit of Gravity: A lonely scientist in the Arctic (Clooney) races to stop a group of astronauts led by Felicity Jones from returning to a devastated Earth. With a release set for December, we have to hope that this is more than some Top 10 filler that will evaporate from existence in a week’s time.
-The Prom: In probably the biggest blank check of the Ryan Murphy deal with Netflix, this musical he’ll direct is based on the Tony-nominated show about a group of Broadway losers (Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James “boo” Corden) who try to find a viral story to get back in the spotlight, and end up going to a town in Indiana to help a lesbian high school student who has been banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom. While it’s clear that this December 11 release is gonna sweep the Golden Globes, the emptiness of this year compared to others could clear the way for some Oscar nominations, including Meryl and the obligatory original song added to a preexisting musical for easy clout.
-The Trial of the Chicago 7 (trailer): When it was announced that Paramount was selling Aaron Sorkin’s new movie to Netflix, some people saw it as a studio dumping a failed awards vehicle to be forgotten. However, the excuse that Sorkin wanted to release this movie before the US presidential elections seems to be true, because critics really enjoyed his old school courtroom drama, centered around the trial on counter cultural activists in the late ‘60s. Everybody praised uniformly the huge cast, that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Strong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton and Mark Rylance, which guarantees a SAG awards nomination (but makes it difficult to decide which actors will actually get nominated for Oscars). With a reaction that brings to mind the days of A Few Good Men and is the best reception he got since his Oscar winning script for The Social Network, the film faces a couple of hurdles. First of all, it got positioned as the frontrunner in the Best Picture race by some people, which instantly puts a target on its back. Then, we have to consider that the movie releases on Netflix this Friday, October 16, which makes it the first big contender this year to face the world, and which in these times of lockdown will probably make the reception to Marriage Story and The Irishman from last year look like a walk in the park. I mean, there are some people who aren’t swayed by Sorkin, and for good reason.
-The United States vs. Billie Holiday: While Paramount was quick to hand The Trial of the Chicago 7 to Netflix, there’s another movie that the studio kept to play in the upcoming awards season. This biographical drama follows the life of another famous musician, Billie Holiday (Andra Day), and we see the journey of her career in jazz as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting operation led by Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes), with whom she had a tumultuous affair. While the movie counts with a screenplay credit by Pulitzer winner Suzan-Lori Parks, the big question mark is the film’s director, Lee Daniels, who hit it big with Precious and then had results that were disastrous (The Paperboy) or financially successful, but not awards-wise (Lee Daniels’ The Butler). However, Paramount trusts in this movie, and with a release date on February 12, they want to make a splash.
-Wolfwalkers (trailer): While the attempts by Apple TV+ to establish themselves as a player in the TV world go from trainwrecks (See) to forgettable (The Morning Show) to eventually great (see Ted Lasso, everybody, this is not a joke), their plans to make a name in the film business have something to do with this year’s Oscars. While Cherry can come or go, they have a solid contender for the Best Feature Documentary with Boys State, but their big dog this year is the new movie by Cartoon Saloon, an Irish studio responsible for the acclaimed The Secret of Kells, The Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner, all of which were nominated for Best Animated Feature. This time, Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart direct a story about a young apprentice hunter who journeys with her father to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night. After getting critically acclaimed following its premiere at TIFF, this is a surefire contender for this year’s Best Animated Feature category, and Apple is gonna parade it before its streaming release on December 11. Also, while you watch that, you could watch a couple of episodes of Ted Lasso, too. It’s a really good show, it’s all I’m saying.
Anyways, that’s all the news from the last few months of festivals. No matter what happens next, this is gonna be a long, long, long race.

2020.10.12 05:25 emiliatheturtle How do you remove yourself from a business you have with friends?

Tl;dr: My friends and I own a small business (it’s not licensed or anything like that) and we have drifted so much from being friends to business partners that I no longer care to be involved. How do I remove myself from the business without creating drama?
I have two friends, Christine and Sarah. We’ve run a business for the past two years (unofficially). We’ve had many ups and downs, and we are fairly successful but we have grown apart as friends. We are more or less business partners at this point. I am currently headed towards finding my own way elsewhere and this business has me drowning. I rarely have time to myself and I am spreading myself thin. My friends, specifically Christine have not been supportive either. Sarah has to be a mediator for us constantly. Even after talking things over with them both and airing out my issues with Christine, I still feel like I have a weight on me. I can’t help but think of how things would be if I were not involved anymore. I feel like I am holding myself back from thriving on my own.
Besides this, I’ve realized we don’t have similar ideals. I hate to say it but they are stuck up, judge-mental, and slightly homophobic. I know friends can and should have differences but oftentimes I cannot relate to them and they can’t relate to me.
Sarah and I are supposed to be in Christine’s wedding next year (covid permitting) and I am already dreading it. She is forcing me to walk down the aisle with someone I have history with and am very uncomfortable with as I’ve told her already. When I communicate how I feel and speak up for myself, I am typically shut down.
How do I end things without making a mess? I don’t wish to argue or create drama. I would hope they could be supportive of me stepping away from the business but I’m fearful that won’t happen.

2020.10.10 23:37 Cryptolexicon Men, Courts, and the Persky Effect: Men are at the Mercy of Judges who are Intimidated by the Feminist Mob.

Men, Courts, and the Persky Effect: Men are at the Mercy of Judges who are Intimidated by the Feminist Mob.

Feminists control judges and control the Court by intimidating anyone who deviates from Feminist Judicial practice and Feminist Extra-Judicial Dogma. Can our Courts dispense true Justice?
The Persky effect is the unwillingness of a judge to rule in a proper manner, fearing Feminist retaliation which will place his job security in jeopardy. Due process and the rule of Law are suborned to self-preservation and career protection.
__________
Judge Aaron Persky
In 2016, Aaron Persky, Superior Court Judge and former prosecutor, acting on the recommendation of the Santa Clara Probation Department, sentenced first time offender Brock Turner to six months in Jail and three years probation.
Turner had been convinced of three counts of sexual assault.
Feminists began protests outside of the Santa Clara courthouse chanting "Hey, hey, ho, ho, Judge Persky has got to go." (Louie, David (2016). Protest held against Judge Persky following Brock Turner's release. ABC7, Sep 02 2016., See also: Roberts, Michelle (2016). Protests continue in fight to recall Santa Clara County judge in Brock Turner case. NBC, Sep 02 2016.)
In response, Persky stated that "California Law requires every judge to consider rehabilitation and probation for first time offenders", adding that a judge cannot allow the opinions of others to factor in his decisions.
Furious feminists targeted Judge Persky, leading him to resign from his position on the criminal bench and return to hearing civil cases (Smith, Doug (2016). Judge in Stanford rape case asks for move to civil cases. Los Angeles Times, Aug 25 2016.)
**This wasn't enough - Feminists wanted permanent blood from Judge Persky, to send a clear message to judges who might think about deviating from feminist judicial practice and feminist extra-judicial dogma.*\*
More than a million signatures were obtained to place a recall vote on the June 05, 2018 ballot (August 02, 2016, CBS42, and, Associated Press (2017). Judge who gave Stanford rapist Brock Turner just six months in jail DEFENDS his decision in his first public statement. Daily Mail, Jul 01 2017.)
Judge Persky was recalled.
Ellen Kreitzberg, Law professor at Santa Clara University, describes the Persky intimidation tactic: it is meant to make judges "look over their shoulder" and "think twice" about issuing a controversial decision (Egelko, Bob (2018). Foes, backers of Judge Persky recall effort face off in debate. SFGate, Apr 20 2018.)
The contrast between the Persky case and other cases where the sex abuser was female reveals three absolute rules of Feminist judicial practice:
  1. If the defendant is male be maximally harsh on him.
  2. If the defendant is female be maximally lenient on her.
  3. If you do not obey these rules, we will destroy you.
..........
Side Note:
Where were the Feminists when Elaine Goodman, 46, pleaded guilty to raping a 13 year old boy: "He is so cute with a nice ass body." She was only given probation (Seamons, Kate (2017). Women raped boy, 13, with 'nice body,' gets probation. Daily Mail, Jan 13 2017.)
Where were they when Katy Perry kissed 19 year old Benjamin Glaze without notice or consent?(Enriquez, Justin (2018). 'I was saving it for someone special': American Idol contestant says Katy Perry stole his 'uncomfortable' first kiss. Daily Mail, Mar 14 2018). Or when she pulled down the pants of another male to show his genitals to others? (Dier, Arden (2019). 2 people accuse Katy Perry of sexual misconduct. Newser, Aug 16 2019.)
Where were they when Corine Audiat , 32, pleaded guilty to two felonies for having sex with a 16 year old male student? (Burke, Minyvonne (2018). Married gym teacher, 32, could AVOID jail for having sex with her student, 16, and sending him flirty text messages as part of a controversial plea deal. Daily Mail, Jan 04 2018.)
Joanne Elwel stalked her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend for seven months, sending disturbing and abusive email, online messages and Facebook communication. Elwel admitted guilt in exchange for zero prison time. Were there any protests at all? You can guess the answer. (Boyle, Darren (2018). Mother-of-three, 39, who stalked her ex-boyfriend's new partner by setting up a Facebook hate group which she even invited her to join is spared jail. Daily Mail, Apr 17 2018.)
Kelsey McCarter (Bonner, David (2017). Coach's wife pleads guilty to statutory rape of player. Opposing Views, Sep 25 2017.)
Brianne Altice (Konstantinides, Annetta (2017). Utah teacher who had sex with three underage male students SOBS as she seeks parole-blaming her actions on 'self-esteem issues.' Daily Mail, Jan 25 2017.)
Molly Shattuck (Duncan, Ian (2015). Ex-Ravens cheerleader Molly Shattuck pleads guilty to rape. June 16, 2015. Baltimore Sun, and, Richman, Talia (2017). Molly Shattuck completes her sentence of 48 weekends for Delaware rape case. Baltimore Sun, Sep 19 2017.)
Danielle Adams (Woman sentenced to 2 months in jail for sex abuse of teen at Hillsboro youth shelter. Fox 12, Jul 07 2017.)
Christine McCallum (Campbell, Andy (2012). Christine McCallum sentenced to 29 months for sex with 13-year-old student. Huffington Post, Mar 28 2012.)
So many others.
Where was the outrage over these lenient sentences?

After the first part of church, Gramps and Granny let Christine leave with Uncle Gary and Aunt Lynn. That was good, Christine decided, because she did not like sitting at church all day until it was dark and time for supper.
After they drove away from the church, they stopped at Gramps and Granny's house first, and Aunt Lynn took Christine inside to help her change into regular clothes.
"After all," Auntie said, "we're going to Stalbacher's, and I just know you wouldn't wanna get barbeque sauce on your nice church dress."
"Don' like my church dress," Christine sighed, happy to switch the stiff, itchy dress and hard, too-tight shoes out for the tee-shirt, jeans, and sneakers that Granny said she could only wear for playtime.
When they got back to the car, Uncle Gary reached over to ruffle Christine's hair.
"Say, kid, those're some nice shoes."
"Thank you very much."
They went and had lunch, and afterward Christine got to go and play at Uncle and Auntie's house. Uncle's little brother Aaron — well, he wasn't so little, because he was 15! — lived there too, and he sat on the living room floor with Christine, showing her how to make a chain by folding long strips of paper together.
"See, ya got it!" Aaron laughed when Christine managed a few folds alone.
After a while, when Christine was tired, Aunt Lynn let her go in the big bedroom and have a nap. That was nice, because the bed was very soft and the room was pretty. Christine did feel a little sad, though. Aunt Lynn kept a picture of Christine's mommy on her dressing table, and it made Christine really miss Mommy to see it.
Aaron came and got Christine when it was almost suppertime, and pretty soon everyone was having a good time eating and laughing.
Then there was a knock at the front door.
"I'll get it," Aunt Lynn said, and she looked like she was going to cry.
"No, babe," Uncle Gary said, "I'll go."
His chair scraped as he pushed back from the table, and the sound made Christine feel sick to her stomach.
Pretty soon there was yelling in the front room, and Aunt Lynn got up to go there. Aaron got up too, and tip-toed over to the kitchen door. Christine did not want to be left out, so she followed.
"...and that's it! Now get t' hell out my house!"
"Who are you to speak to me like..."
"Papa, please, Gary just means that..."
Someone got hit. Something thudded on the floor.
"Don't you ever raise a hand to her!" Uncle Gary shouted, and then there was a lot of crash-banging and yelling and screaming.
Christine ran over into the corner and couched down, eyes closed, hands on her ears. Aaron sat with her, a hand on her back, and when she peeked, he had his eyes closed too.
When Christine looked again, Aaron was standing, watching as Uncle Gary stumbled into the kitchen. Aunt Lynn was with him, and she went straight over to Christine.
"Hey, sugar," Auntie said. "Hey. You scared?"
"Why was there so much yelling?"
"Oh, because grown-ups are silly sometimes. Here, will you stand up? Guess what?"
"What?"
"You get to sleep over here tonight!"
That was good news, great news, and Christine threw her arms around Auntie's neck. Auntie picked her up, hugging her tight, and Christine saw then the red mark on Auntie's cheek and the tears in her eyes.

"Look, Tara, I just think it's a little misogynistic..."
"Oh, cripes. Mom, it's not misogynistic, or sexist, or whatever the hell else you're gonna claim it is."
"It certainly is! Why, Chris is clearly treating you like an enslaved little housewife..."
"Love you to, Mona," Chris piped up from the kitchen doorway.
That shut Tara's mom up for a while and she got very focused on her tisane — heaven help you if you called it a tea — as Chris moved to hug Tara.
"Need my help?" Chris whispered.
"I'm fine. Mom's just..."
"She know you work, right?"
Tara nodded, laughing.
"Mona," Chris sighed, turning to face her partner's mother, "Tara and I are plenty equitable about stuff around here. We split the cleaning, I cook way more than you probably think, we..."
"Well," Mona said, "do you have to be quite so butch in your behaviour, Christine?"
That comment made Chris blink hard.
"S'cuse me?" she said.
"I just think it's terribly old-fashioned, you being the 'man' of the relationship, so to speak. I mean, I was so relieved when Tara turned out to be a lesbian, but..."
"Mom, leave," Tara said, crossing to take Mona's cup away and dump the contents down the sink.
"Dear, I'm only saying, if you'd paid attention to anything I taught you, you'd know you don't have to do like those girls back in the day, aping heterosexuality so people..."
"Out!" Tara shouted.
Without another word, Mona stood and made her way out of the kitchen. Tara followed after, seeing her out the front door with a slam. Chris, as a distraction, turned and started to wash the few dishes that were in the sink. She knew Tara was back when she felt a soft touch on her back.
"Hey," Tara whispered.
"I love you," Chris choked out.
"I love you too."
"If I'm not doing enough, or not helping you right, or..."
"Chris, no! No, it's not that. My mom is just... Well, you know Mom."
"Yeah, but... I mean, what does she want from me? What, am I supposed to wear dresses and make-up and a frilly apron all the time or something? I thought she was all about women being free to be themselves and live how they want."
"She is. Usually. Lately, though, she's... I don't know."
Chris set the cup she had been scrubbing in the drain rack, dried her hands, and turned to pull Tara close.
"Speaking of moms, how's mine?" she asked.
"Chris, your mom is literally perfect, as far as I'm concerned. No nagging, no telling me how I'm doing everything wrong. Oh, and she's funny!"
"Funny? Mom's funny?"
"Yeah. She told me a lot of great stories over lunch today. Like this one about you, when you were really little. It was your second birthday, and apparently you were so excited, especially for the cake, and Jan let you have some of the frosting left in the bowl, and you went and managed to pull the whole cake off of the table."
"I have no memory of ever being anything but a perfectly well-behaved child. Clearly, Mom's running a smear campaign."
They both laughed, the earlier unpleasantness almost forgotten.
