2020.09.09 19:21 Whos_Kiesling u/magnifizio - A review

This is a review of my recent experience with u/magnifizio and his service of supplying rare and hard to find ACTUAL Lepin sets. My order was for Lepin 16049 Village Mill Raid and Lepin 16011 Medieval market Village. I will not delve into price of sets or shipping(it was what I was willing to pay and what I thought was fair) and I won't review the sets (plenty of reviews out there). This is just a review of this seller.
I went through his site (https://creepyhybrid.easy.co). I was able to you PayPal Goods and Services.
I ordered on Friday, August 28. It was late night in Maylasia so obviously he wouldn't see it until Saturday August 29. When he did get the order, he was quick with communication and informed me it would be a day or 2 to get the items ready. He also informed me that Monday August 31 is Independence Day in Maylasia so that would delay shipping. No worries from me and promptly on Tuesday September 1, my order was shipped and I received tracking number. Shipping was done via Aramex which I find to be quick and they hand off to UPS for delivery in the USA.
Of course I follow the tracking constantly and saw it was going from Maylasia to Osaka, Japan. About 2 days in I get the new UPS tracking number and when I looked that up it showe a SEVERE WEATHER DELAY on my package. Sure enough, Typhoon Haishen was passing between Maylasia and Japan. Anyway, once passed the package was on the move and went to Alaska, Kentucky and then here to Pennsylvania. I received it yesterday September 8. Package was very well packed and wrapped and arrived in great shape.
So to reiterate:
August 28 - order (late day) September 1 - shipped September 8 - delivered
These dates include a national holiday and Typhonn in between and still this was the fastest I have ever received a package of alternative bricks.
In conclusion, if u/magnifizio has a hard to find Actual Lepin set you want, go for it. You won't be disappointed! I highly recommend!

2020.09.09 00:25 rayef3rw A Brief Look at How Covid-19 Impacts Current Annual Consecutive Game Streaks

I think the fact that this season will be a college football season like no other goes without saying. This year is a patchwork quilt of teams that are or aren't playing this fall (or something in-between), with many more games likely to be postponed or canceled due to ongoing Covid-19-related fallout.
Perhaps the only close comparison is the 1918 season, where the closing months of WWI sidelined many of the teams that had traditionally played college football, and the Spanish Flu sidelined the rest for varying periods of time.
Looking back through the history of college football, the World Wars (US involvement during 1917-1918 and 1941-1945) have been the two primary disruptors of the traditional yearly meetings between college football teams. I'll do a little more analysis later on in the post, but the vast majority of the existing consecutive game streaks in college football date to post-WWII, with only 27 currently-surviving consecutive match-ups dating to before 1941.
With that introduction, let's take a look at the longest-surviving uninterrupted match-ups in college football and which ones will be impacted this fall. As a quick aside, this of course all depends on how these records get counted going forward and whether a Spring 2020 season (if/when it happens) will be fully counted as the "2020" season, so I'll just add the caveat that these are uninterrupted fall meetings for now -- and assume that applies throughout.
Let me also preface this list by saying that while I tried to include all of the smaller FCS/DII conferences, I would be shocked if I didn't miss a few. If you notice any uninterrupted rivalry games missing from this list, please! -- let me know!

So, what does this all mean? I won't do a full re-hash of the chart, but I'll do some highlights and summaries of the important sections below.
As a side note, I kind of arbitrarily chose to end in 1972, but it has some justification that I'll get to later on. Really, though, it was mostly just because I felt like that was a decent stopping point.

Most Common Causes of Breaks Before Covid

So, what was the primary reason that most these consecutive game streaks last came to an end? And will it be beaten out by Covid, assuming Spring 2020 doesn't count/doesn't happen? I didn't do a fully exhaustive search (partly because some stuff was hard to find and partly because I got tired of looking, if we're being honest), but World War II ended the bulk of the streaks on this list, adding up to about 40 of the matches. The other factors aren't particularly close to matching that total, though World War I is probably the next closest, aside from generic scheduling conflicts/choosing not to schedule each other, with about 5 stoppages.
Other common factors included:
Other less common reasons for breaks that I found amusing included:

Implications

Discontinued Games

The teams and conferences that suffer the most from this are exactly who you'd expect it to be. The Ivy League, Big Ten, and Pac-12 are losing the most uninterrupted games, though the Patriot League, the SWAC, and the MAC are also losing some notable matches
By far the most notable game that will not be played this fall will be the LafayetteLafayette LehighLehigh match-up; it will be the first time in 123 years that the game won't be played in the fall. It was last forgone in 1896 due to a dispute over player eligibility; had it not been for that break in relations, The Rivalry would have dated back wholly uninterrupted to the two teams' first meeting in 1884, which would have been good for 136 consecutive years of playing.
The next oldest game not to be played this fall is the MinnesotaMinnesota WisconsinWisconsin game, followed by the ClemsonClemson South CarolinaSouth Carolina game, which has been played continuously since 1909, meaning the 2020 season will be the end of 3 of the longest-running continuous series in all of college football.
Finally, one game I hate to see go is the MorehouseMorehouse TuskegeeTuskegee match, which had previously been played continuously since 1936. I couldn't find a lot about the history of this series online very easily, but it's the longest-running HBCU match I could find. Several other historic HBCU rivalries ended temporarily fairly recently owing to the disbanding of Prairie View A&MPrairie View A&M for the 1990 football season.

Previously Unbroken Series

Unfortunately, Covid is putting an end to a few series which have previously met every year without interruption. Those matches include:

Non-Conference Games That Were Maintained

You've got to give a lot of credit to any ADs who managed to keep non-conference rivalry games going through all this. The only consecutive non-conference rivalry games that will survive undamaged are those belonging to three major service academies. Unfortunately, the Merchant MarinesMerchant Marine and the Coast GuardCoast Guard were not so fortunate, and have canceled their fall season.
The ArmyArmy, NavyNavy, and Air ForceAir Force managed to keep afloat their rivalries which have been played continuously since 1971/72 for the Air Force and since 1930 for the Army and Navy. This was possible only by the work of the Air Force, who, as of right now, will be playing only Army and Navy this fall, though the Mountain West Conference did recently announce a revised schedule which allows for 2 non-conference games, so this could change. Both ArmyArmy and NavyNavy are currently playing full schedules.
This was really the main reason I stopped making my list in 1972. That, and it lets me talk about the Textile Bowl (NC State vs Clemson). I'll discuss that in the following section.

Games Unlikely to Be Rescheduled

Though most of these games are intra-conference games that can be rescheduled in the Spring fairly easily, there are a few notable games that will almost certainly not be. Many of these games include teams who will both be playing this season, but will be playing in different conferences or unable to meet for other reasons. These games include:

Non-Conference Games Which Can (Probably) Be Rescheduled

While Conference games are possible to be scheduled fairly easily, there are a few non-conference games which will probably be resumed this Spring.

Closing

To answer that question I posed earlier (will Covid potentially impact more currently-consecutive football meetings than World War II), the answer is yes. While this is a bit disingenuous to say, since many otherwise-consecutive rivalry games impacted by World War II have stopped playing since the war for other reasons (looking at you, 2010-14 Conference Realignment), Covid will impact 66 otherwise-uninterrupted matches, while 32 will continue on. Of those 66 canceled matches, though, only the 9 listed above (under the are Unlikely to Be Rescheduled section) are, in my view, highly unlikely to be revived in the Spring, while the rest can continue on in the Spring if scheduling and Corona allow.
1 - I would like to find a more concise and formal source, but so far one has evaded me
2 - Several Minnesota-based athletic pages say that the cause was Teddy Roosevelt banning rivalry games in 1906; despite that, the only period explanation I've found for the break in the games was a June 1906 article about a ChicagoChicago MinnesotaMinnesota game scheduled for 1907, which said the 1906 match-up was prevented because "The big nine conference [Big 10 today], in forbidding games which established a western championship, did so on the ground that it brought about an unhealthy rivalry and stirred up improper spirit between the big educational institutions." Though the Big 9 could have chosen to do that because of threats by Roosevelt, the immediate cause was the conference's decision.
3 - Some sources disagree on this: At the time of their first athletic break, then-AD at BGSU said "Frankly, Toledo is too tough for us in football. We feel that we can no longer compete on even terms." However, there have also been references to players having "more trouble avoiding flying fists than avoiding blockers and tacklers" before the series was temporarily canceled as well. For a good write-up of the series, see here

2020.09.07 15:39 rusticgorilla Lost in the Sauce: DHS hides intelligence that reveals Trump using Russia's playbook, again

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
Housekeeping:

Trump’s playbook is Russia’s playbook

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in July withheld an intelligence bulletin warning of a Russian plot to spread misinformation regarding Joe Biden's mental health. The bulletin, titled “Russia Likely to Denigrate Health of U.S. Candidates to Influence 2020 Election,” was blocked by the office of acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf on July 9.
  • The bulletin states that analysts had “high confidence” in their conclusion. However, a DHS spokesperson tried to defend the “delay” in issuing the document by saying it did not meet the agency’s standards. This is curious because just a week later, on July 16, DHS circulated a bulletin on anarchists in Portland that officers admitted they had “low confidence” in. Why was the Russia memo held back but the Portland one released?
  • Trump has been pushing the same line of attack against Biden for months - yet another instance of Russia and Trump operating from the same playbook. For instance, in March Trump said there was “something going on” with Biden; in June Trump ran selectively edited ads asserting that Biden is “unfit to serve as Commander in Chief”; last month Trump ran a digital ad portraying Biden as perpetually confused and mentally unstable. Most recently, Trump said questions about his own health are only in the news because “they want to try and get me to be on Biden's physical level."
DHS is just the latest agency in the Trump administration to erode election security, following actions by the Justice Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) last month. DNI John Ratcliffe announced he was ending in-person congressional briefings on election security ahead of November and AG Bill Barr removed a leading career official at the Justice Department’s national security division, replacing him with an inexperienced political appointee.
The ODNI’s decision to halt congressional election briefs may have been influenced by top White House officials. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, among others, have repeatedly discussed in meetings with staff and with Trump “how to restrict and control the flow of information on such sensitive topics to Capitol Hill.”
One White House official told The Daily Beast that Meadows has for months been wary of the type of briefings on Capitol Hill that Democratic sources can potentially use to try to make Trump look bad through surreptitious leaks to media outlets.
Meanwhile, interim Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Marco Rubio (R-FL) said last week that his committee will be granted an exception to the ODNI’s new policy and continue to receive in-person briefings from top U.S. intelligence officials about election-security issues. This essentially means that only Democrat-led committees have been cut out of the process ensuring election security.
House Democrats wrote to Ratcliffe insinuating if his office does not provide the previously scheduled briefings this month they will issue subpoenas and/or defund the ODNI in the appropriations bill due by the end of the month. Read the letter here.
In addition to attacks on Biden’s health, DHS has determined that Russia is seeking to “amplify” concerns over the integrity of U.S. elections by promoting allegations that mail-in voting will lead to widespread fraud. Intelligence analysts say this strategy has been underway since at least March, coinciding with Trump’s own assaults on mail-in voting.
  • For instance, in March Trump said if he agreed to funding vote-by-mail expansions in the first coronavirus stimulus bill, the U.S. would see “levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again” (clip). Fact check: Neither party has historically benefited. On April 7, at the White House press briefing, Trump claimed: "Mail ballots are a very dangerous thing for this country, because they're cheaters… They're fraudulent in many cases" (clip). Fact check: There is no evidence that mail ballots are dangerous or fraudulent.
At a White House press briefing on Friday, Trump denied there is any proof that Russia poisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Instead of backing the German government's analysis of Nalvany's illness, Trump then redirected the criticism from Russia to China (clip).
"I don't know exactly what happened. I think it's tragic. It's terrible; it shouldn't happen. We haven't had any proof yet, but I will take a look. It is interesting that everybody is always mentioning Russia - and I don't mind you mentioning Russia - but I think probably China, at this point, is a nation that you should be talking about much more so than Russia. Because the things that China's doing are far worse.”
Trump then went on to say he’s “taken stronger action against Russia than any other country in the world,” but added “I do get along with President Putin” (clip).
  • RELATED: Leaked notes obtained by the Telegraph say that when Theresa May asked for Trump to take a strong stand after Russia poisoned Sergei Skripal, Trump replied “I’d rather follow than lead.” He pushed May to “put together a coalition” first.
The Trump administration plans to deport a Russian national living in America, a move experts say is in response to a politically motivated request by Russia. Gregory Duralev was persecuted by the Russian state for exposing corruption. He fled to America and applied for asylum in 2015. While waiting for a decision on his application, he was arrested by ICE and jailed for nearly 18 months. His case is now in court.
“DHS has acted no better than the Russian authorities,” Duralev said. “They simply fabricated charges against me for violations I never committed — and if DHS can trump up charges against immigrants with impunity, nobody can guarantee they won’t start doing it” to regular Americans. “So that’s the main message I now hope to send.”

Michael Cohen & Peter Strzok

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok has a book coming out called “Compromised.” In it, he alleges that FBI investigators came to believe it was “conceivable, if unlikely” that Russia was secretly controlling President Trump after he took office:
“We certainly had evidence that this was the case: that Trump, while gleefully wreaking havoc on America’s political institutions and norms, was pulling his punches when it came to our historic adversary, Russia,” Strzok writes. “Given what we knew or had cause to suspect about Trump’s compromising behavior in the weeks, months, and years leading up to the election, moreover, it also seemed conceivable, if unlikely, that Moscow had indeed pulled off the most stunning intelligence achievement in human history: secretly controlling the president of the United States — a Manchurian candidate elected.”
He now says he doesn’t believe that Trump is literally a Russian spy: “I don’t think that Trump, when he meets with Putin, receives a task list for the next quarter,” Strzok said, referencing the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. “But I do think the president is compromised, that he is unable to put the interests of our nation first, that he acts from hidden motives, because there is leverage over him, held specifically by the Russians but potentially others as well.”
In an interview with Politico, Strzok confirms that he and then-deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, opened a counterintelligence case on the president, but that it likely was never pursued. Two weeks ago, NYT reported that Rosenstein secretly closed it.
As if there weren’t enough political books coming out this summefall, Michael Cohen is releasing his, called “Disloyal: A Memoir.” The following a couple of quick takeaways:
Cohen says that he, Trump, Aras Agalarov, Emin Agalarov, and others, watched a strip show in Las Vegas where one performer simulated peeing on another performer, who pretended to drink it. Trump reportedly reacted with “delight.” Aras Agalarov, a Russian real estate mogul, is a trusted associate of Putin and reportedly served as a liaison between Trump and the Russian president during Trump’s trip to Moscow.
WaPo:
On Russia, Cohen writes that the cause behind Trump’s admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin is simpler than many of his critics assume. Above all, he writes, Trump loves money — and he wrongly identified Putin as “the richest man in the world by a multiple.” Trump loved Putin, Cohen wrote, because the Russian leader had the ability “to take over an entire nation and run it like it was his personal company — like the Trump Organization, in fact.”
...According to Cohen, Trump’s sycophantic praise of the Russian leader during the 2016 campaign began as a way to suck up and ensure access to the oligarch’s money after he lost the election. But he claims Trump came to understand that Putin’s hatred of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, dating to her support for the 2011 protest movement in Russia, could also help Trump amass more power in the United States.

USPS & mail voting

According to a Washington Post report yesterday, Postmaster Louis DeJoy engaged in campaign money laundering, also called a straw-donor scheme, at his former logistics business. Five of his former employees told WaPo that they were “urged” to donate to politicians in North Carolina and would be paid back through bonuses from DeJoy. Such a plan would allow DeJoy to illegally circumvent campaign donation limits.
“Louis was a national fundraiser for the Republican Party. He asked employees for money. We gave him the money, and then he reciprocated by giving us big bonuses,” said David Young, DeJoy’s longtime director of human resources, who had access to payroll records at New Breed from the late 1990s to 2013 and is now retired.
“He would ask employees to make contributions at the same time that he would say, ‘I’ll get it back to you down the road,’ ” said [another] former employee.
...A Washington Post analysis of federal and state campaign finance records found a pattern of extensive donations by New Breed employees to Republican candidates, with the same amount often given by multiple people on the same day. Between 2000 and 2014, 124 individuals who worked for the company together gave more than $1 million to federal and state GOP candidates. Many had not previously made political donations, and have not made any since leaving the company, public records show.
More than one million mail-in ballots were sent late to voters during the 2020 primary elections, an audit by the USPS IG’s office determined. Most of the ballots were late, the USPS says, because local election boards sent the ballots to voters at the last minute. Official press release.
[The audit] found the problems during primaries had been most pronounced in Kentucky and New York, where a combined 628,000 ballots were sent out late. In 17 states, the audit found, more than 589,000 ballots were sent from election boards to voters after the state’s ballot mailing deadline. In 11 states, more than 44,000 ballots were sent from election boards to voters the day of or the day before the state’s primary election.
One particularly troubling situation, auditors found, unfolded in Pennsylvania, where 500 ballots were sent to voters the day after the election.
Furthermore, only 13% of the ballots were mailed with the recommended bar code tracking technology.
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) was blocked from attending two scheduled tours of USPS facilities last week. Local Postal Service officials informed her and union leaders waiting to accompany her into the building that national USPS leadership had directed them to bar the group from the building. A Postal Service spokeswoman said they simply needed more notice for a tour.
Many states, including important battleground states, are not legally permitted to process mail-in/absentee ballots until Election Day, leading to concern that results will be delayed by days or weeks. For instance, in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan election officials cannot even begin processing ballots until Election Day. Processing involves opening envelopes, flattening ballots to run through the scanning machine, and prepping for the scanning.
"When voters have to wait so long for results, it erodes trust in the process and leaves room for partisan bad actors to dispute the will of the people," said Amber McReynolds, CEO of the National Vote at Home Institute, a nonprofit organization.
AG Bill Barr made three stunning false claims about mail voting during an interview with Wolf Blitzer last week. First, Barr wouldn’t even acknowledge that voting twice is a crime - because just hours earlier, Trump encouraged his North Carolina supporters to vote twice to “test” the state’s mail-in voting system (clip).
BLITZER: It sounds like he’s encouraging people to break the law and try to vote twice.
BARR: It seems to me what he’s saying is, he’s trying to make the point that the ability to monitor this system is not good. And it was so good, if you tried to vote a second time you would be caught if you voted in person.
BLITZER: That would be illegal if they did that. If somebody mailed in a ballot and then actually showed up to vote in person, that would be illegal.
BARR: "I don't know what the law in the particular state says.”
BLITZER: You can’t vote twice.
BARR: "I don't know what the law in the particular state says.”
Then, Barr tried to assert that foreign countries could fake ballots, but when challenged he admitted he had no evidence (clip).
BLITZER: You’ve said you were worried that a foreign country could send thousands of fake ballots, thousands of fake ballots to people that it might be impossible to detect. What are you basing that on?
BARR: I’m basing — as I’ve said repeatedly, I’m basing that on logic.
BLITZER: Pardon?
BARR: Logic.
Finally, Barr cited a supposed incident of mail-in voting fraud in Texas. Too bad it doesn’t exist.

The payroll

Charles Rettig, the Trump-appointed IRS Commissioner who has refused to release President Trump’s tax returns, has made hundreds of thousands of dollars renting out Trump properties while in office. Rettig makes $100,000 - $200,000 a year from two units at Trump International Waikiki. When first nominated, Rettig failed to disclose his financial ties to Trump Waikiki. When questioned by Congress, he did not directly answer concerns about the properties.
CREW: With Trump’s name removed from some buildings as it began to hurt property values, we can only imagine how toxic it would become if a bombshell in his tax returns were released. Which means the IRS Commissioner has a vested interest in the success of the Trump brand—and of preventing anything that could damage it.
Voice of America staffers say Trump appointee Michael Pack is threatening to wash away legal protections intended to insulate their news reports from political meddling. Since arriving, Pack has fired the network's leaders, pushed out agency executives, refused to approve allotted budgets, and refused to renew visas for foreign employees.
  • Further reading: “Deleted Biden video sets off a crisis at Voice of America,” Politico.
Pack suggested the staff he fired and foreign journalists he essentially kicked out may have been foreign spies, without offering any evidence to support his claim. A group of 14 senior VOA journalists are openly disputing his explanation:
“Mr. Pack has made a thin excuse that his actions are meant to protect national security, but just as was the case with the McCarthy ‘Red Scare,’ which targeted VOA and other government organizations in the mid-1950s, there has not been a single demonstrable case of any individual working for VOA — as the USAGM CEO puts it — ‘posing as a spy,’ ” they wrote.
The White House is searching for a replacement for Federal Trade Commission Chair Joe Simons, a Republican who has publicly resisted President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on social media companies. Simons, a veteran antitrust lawyer, cannot legally be removed by the president except in cases of gross negligence. But the White House has already interviewed at least one candidate for the post.
  • RELATED: The Justice Department plans to bring an antitrust case against Google as soon as this month, after Attorney General William P. Barr overruled career lawyers who said they needed more time to build a strong case.
Richard Grenell, formerly the highest-ranking out gay official in the Trump administration, has joined a law firm founded by Pat Robertson that has a history of opposing LGBTQ+ rights. Grenell also recently joined the Republican National Committee to do outreach to LGBTQ+ voters.
The Trump administration has quietly named a new acting State Department inspector general. Matthew Klimow, the U.S. ambassador to Turkmenistan since mid-2019, is the third acting IG since Trump and Pompeo ousted Senate-confirmed IG Steve Linick in May.
Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s current special envoy to Northern Ireland, former Chief of Staff, and former acting head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is starting a hedge fund focused on financial services regulation. Ethics experts say Mulvaney explicitly using his knowledge of CFPB to place bets for and against companies gives him an unfair and perhaps illegal advantage.

Court and DOJ matters

Court cases
The Trump administration must, for now, stop winding down in-person counting efforts for the 2020 census, a federal judge in California ordered.
The three-judge panel hearing a challenge to Trump’s new anti-immigrant census policy seemed hostile to the government’s arguments in a hearing last week.
A federal judge has stopped the Trump administration from enforcing a rule change that would let health care providers deny medical services to LGBTQ patients on the grounds of religion.
Justice Department
Federal prosecutors are preparing to charge longtime GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy in connection with efforts to influence the U.S. government on behalf of foreign interests. Broidy helped raise millions for Donald Trump’s election and the Republican Party.
Barr ordered another round of changes to FISA rules, tightening the use of government surveillance on political candidates or their staffers — a move conservatives will likely cheer, as they have long criticized how the FBI investigated the Trump campaign in 2016.
Before conducting physical searches or wiretaps of a federal election official, members of the official's staff, candidates for federal office, or their staff or advisers, the FBI must now consider giving them a "defensive briefing," to tell them that they could be the target of foreign influence.

2020.08.30 07:58 conspiretoreason My Peculiar Journal

We all have stories from our childhood that we can never really explain; or forget. Things happen that we never thought were possible, or just downright seem crazy. My life has been full of these stories to everyone else’s disbelief; for the most part.
Part 1

We’ll start with the earliest story I can remember. I was about 7 years old helping my mother clean out a large cathedral church in our eastern Kentucky mountains that had been abandoned for a few decades and this was 1999 so it had been a while since anyone had been here and it showed. The city was planning on reviving the cathedral to host events and things of the like. My mom was active in our community since she didn’t have an actual job and needed something to occupy her time. She was very excited to bring me to the cathedral and show me all the old things left behind. Old pictures, notes and ledgers from the previous clergy, candelabras; things like that. We explored for a bit in the old offices of the clergy and nothing had really been left behind besides sermon transcripts, journals, and notes that seemed to be frantically scribbled down.

This cathedral had once been a place of worship, but no amount of research I have done in my life could ever point me to what they worshiped and prayed to. After exploring a bit more in the main chamber, I noticed a door behind the pulpit that was... strange for lack of better words. I pointed at the door and asked my mom what was behind it. She didn’t know since it was locked. I thought this was strange since they were there to clean it but couldn’t get inside the obscure room. I tried and tried to twist the knob but had no luck. My mom had left me alone to play while she cleaned and marked things for the trash. I found what looked like a letter opener and examined it. It looked very old and was dust laden. It had intricate designs inlaid along the skinny handle and blade on the end that looked like words, but I couldn’t read very well at the time. I took the letter opener and put it in the lock for the door. At first it didn’t want to go in the slot, so I figured it wasn’t meant for the door. But curiosity got the best of me and I turned it around. It went in like a missing puzzle piece and my eyes grew wide with astonishment.

I figured since my mom was busy and not watching me that I probably shouldn’t enter whatever lie in wait for me, but my 7-year-old brain kept telling me to go inside and see what’s in there. I slowly and quietly twisted the knob and a pungent smell burned my nostrils. It smelled like fuel and burnt hair and left a lasting aftertaste in my mouth and nose. I stood in the doorway holding my flashlight that changed colors and looked around the room when I felt a sudden breeze and the door creaked shut behind me. I was instantly scared, but I didn’t make a noise. I looked around the room and didn’t see anything too interesting: some desks, furniture draped with cloth, old books, things like that. It suddenly didn’t seem so scary anymore, so I pushed my way through the room lifting the drapes and finding old, rotting furniture. I made my way to the back of the room and heard something moving quietly around me. I frantically turned all around the room shining my flashlight to find where the noise was coming from, but it stopped.

I remember feeling very wrong and upset. I hid under one of the pieces of furniture with a drape. I listened carefully to see if whatever was moving around me had started again. I could hear faint music coming from the boom box my mother had in the cathedral but nothing else besides my trembling breaths. I remember this ever so vividly because that was the first and only time I had ever pissed my pants due to fear. I waited what felt like forever, still cautious about whatever was moving around me. I finally got up the courage to escape the room, so I inched toward the door trying not to make any noise. I made it to the door without making any noise with my clumsy 7-year-old legs and when I tried to turn the knob, I felt an extreme burning sensation in my hand that extended all the way through my body. It felt like someone holding a butane torch to my hand from the inside out. I quickly let go of the knob and blew on my hand.

I had winced so loudly that it echoed throughout the room. The moving started again. I ran and dropped my flashlight, my only sense of security at this moment. I ducked behind another piece of furniture and held my breath. I could hear it inching closer and closer, breath heavy with determination and lust. I felt its hot breath glide over the desk like sulfur fog and I recognized the scent from when I first entered the room. I put my hand over my mouth, but it was no good. The air became so cold that the sweat on my skin began to steam like a hot tub in the dead of winter. It was only a moment before I heard the creature growl and I knew I had to run. I made it back to the door and the knob finally turned. But when I opened the door, the cathedral looked… different. It was now filled with people in the pews sitting shoulder to shoulder, all chanting and praying with words I didn’t recognize.

The congregation had their heads bowed so I couldn’t see their faces, but the air smelled of death. They had normal clothes on, but something didn’t seem right. The clothes looked… dated and old. The air was still very cold and my sweat and breath steamed into view. I stood there in shock because I knew I was lost. I knew something was wrong and I had to find my way back. I moved from behind the pulpit and around the congregation to find my way out. But when I moved from the stage, the chanting stopped and I felt that wrong feeling I had in the room amplify. I saw the cathedral doors at the back and I ran as fast and hard as I could towards it but seemed to get farther away no matter how fast or hard I ran. I tripped over the rug that now looked brand new and untarnished flat on my face. I could feel the congregation collapse in on me and I couldn’t do anything to save myself. I felt hopeless and I knew that I’d never see my mother again but then, it felt like time stopped.

The congregation was dog piled on top of me and I couldn’t see, but I felt the weight go away instantly. How many of these people were once lost like me? I stood up and looked around, but the cathedral looked the same. But everyone was gone. The air wasn’t cold or foul smelling anymore, but something didn’t seem right. I hadn’t found my way back to my mother and I was scared that I wouldn’t at all. I didn’t know what to do or where to go so I just sat on the rug and cried. I felt a hand on my shoulder after a few moments that didn’t feel quite right. It felt as if all the life had drained out of me but was quickly returned. I could feel the coldness and lifelessness of the hand and the body that it was connected to. I turned around and saw what had been moving inside the room. It stood at least 7 feet tall and was stained black as night.

It had a human like figure but no discernible facial features. There were scars all over its body and the breath that came from its nose was much like that of a bull or horse. There were no eyes or mouth, as it looked like they had been melted away. As I looked for where the eyes should be, my gaze was locked and time began to flow again; it felt like I was being sent through time. I could see the years that went past, the people coming and going from the services, and how the cathedral came to be in the state it was when my mother and I arrived.

When I finally blinked, I was in the spot where the creature had replaced me in my own time and my mother was standing over me yelling. She said that she had lost sight of me for just a few minutes then I just appeared on the rug behind her. I could see the fear, anger, and relief in her eyes all at once. I felt sick and fatigued. I could feel my eyes turning heavy while I stared at the burn on my hand. I touched the already oddly aged scarring and wondered why it didn't hurt anymore. Why did this scarring look so old compared to my other bumps and bruises and scars?

She was furious that I had run off and didn’t tell her where I was going and wanted to know how I burnt my hand since there was no electricity or fire here. It wasn’t until a few days later when we went back to help paint that I was able to recount and process what had happened. At the time, I didn’t understand what had transpired or what had happened and to be honest I still don’t 20 years later. I have thought about that first experience with the peculiar many times in my life, but it wouldn’t be the only time I would experience something like this. I've tried to forget this incident, but I'm constantly reminded by the burn scars on my right hand that faintly have those letters from the letter opener etched into them. Sometimes the letters will be more visible and I can feel a pain coming from deep within them.

In 2009, before my parents had divorced, I had asked my mother about the cathedral and what had ever happened to it. I didn’t remember ever going back after returning to paint the second time. She looked at me very strangely and asked what I was talking about it. I explained to her that in the neighborhood we use to live in, there was a cathedral that she helped to clean up so they could host events and things like that. She looked very puzzled and said there was no cathedral in Red Fox and asked if I was feeling okay. I felt a strange sickness in my stomach that left me with so many questions. How could she not remember the time I fucking disappeared? I continued to do some research on Google Maps because it was only a few miles from our old trailer and I found the road it used to be at the end of at the top of the hill. I scrolled to the end of Blackhat Drive but what I found would prove that something was there after all. I zoomed in on the satellite imaging of the hilltop and could see that there was an old structure there that had either withered away after years of neglect or had deliberately been destroyed.

Oddly enough, I was able to use street view here which was still pretty new and I could get to the end of the path before the dirt road started. I looked at the distant structure and I immediately knew that the cathedral had stood there. I rotated around and looked through the trees and what I saw chilled me to the bones. I saw the shadow of the black figure that had sent me back to my world. He looked the same as I had remembered and had dreams about for years. I ran to my mother to show her the evidence I had, but when I pulled up the satellite image, the hilltop was just a bare dirt and rock circle with no structure there. The trees had all died and there was trash on the ground that you could faintly see. Was this the product of my doing? Or had someone else gotten too curious about what was behind the door?

When I started driving, I went back to the end of Blackhat Drive. I felt an eerie sense of familiarity and forgetfulness at the same time. The trees had started to come back to life, but the feeling of death was in the air. I walked to where the cathedral should have been, but instead saw nothing but decaying brick and plaster. I felt like I was being watched, but I brushed it off. The creature had helped me before so I knew it wouldn't harm me if it were to be here. I walked around the dirt square remembering all I had felt 20 years ago. I stepped on something odd in the dirt and thought it was a rock. But as I dusted away the top layer of dirt, I found my flashlight and part of the drape I had hidden under.

My mom took me to see a psychiatrist for a few years after that. She became concerned after I had another incident in our home, spouting off crazy things about what I saw every night. About 2 years after the cathedral incident, we moved from that part of Kentucky out to the very tip of East Kentucky where Virginia and West Virginia meet and in the time before moving, one of the most peculiar events of my life happened in my very first home. After moving to the place I would call my hometown for the next 15 years, there were many other encounters with the in-explainable that I’ll never forget.

sport management coordinator.
  1. The internship agency IS NOT required to provide the student with the regular
university vacations or holidays. It is up to each student to negotiate these
terms.
  1. In the case of illness or emergency preventing the internship experience, it is
the responsibility of the student to inform BOTH the agency supervisor and
the sport management coordinator. In the case of the sport management
16
coordinator, notification within 48 hours will be fine. However, you should
inform the agency IMMEDIATELY.
  1. Agencies should provide the necessary program supplies and equipment to
conduct the activities of students. Always check with the agency supervisor
before any personal money is spent on program materials.
  1. Students are expected to pay for their own transportation and similar costs
unless a special arrangement is made with the agency.
2.3. EVALUATION AND GRADING

CONCLUSION:
This internship at work was a useful experience. We have gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. We achieved several of our learning goals. We got insight into professional practices currently advocated in the industry. We learned the different facets of working within a well established industry.
Related to our study we learned more about the interns at work. Furthermore we have experienced that it is of importance that education is objective and that we have to be aware of the industrial aspect of the topics we study.
We collected data on all types of interns at work in various websites, books & internet. So all the work mentioned above involved real time data. The internship program and their activities were given while for others data , they were taken from different websites .
This internship programme was not one sided, but it was a way of sharing knowledge, ideas and opinions. The internship was also good to find out what our strengths and weaknesses are. This helped us to define what skills and knowledge we have to improve in the coming time. We can confidently assert that the knowledge we gained through this internship is sufficient to contribute towards our future endeavours. At last this internship has given us new insights and motivation to pursue a career in core departments

2020.08.29 01:24 tengrrl CFP for 2020 [email protected] Virtual Preconference on Social Justice

Hello colleagues!
I'm writing with a reminder about next week's Friday, Sep. 4 deadline for [email protected] preconference proposals.
In lieu of a traditional preconference, we are holding a virtual half-day preconference with a mix of traditional and non-traditional elements. In addition to Q&A sessions about submitted papers that will be available to read in advance, we'll have a 90-minute keynote session with 3 extremely accomplished speakers: - Dr. Iris Davis, a practicing medical doctor in North Carolina, who has worked on community-based approaches to addressing racial health disparities. - Dr. Les Hutchinson, whose work on technology, privacy, and Indigenous feminist research methods and community engagement is critically reimagining multiple fields, including rhetorics of technology and technical communication, and challenging scholars in those fields to face and amend racist practices.
Please check out the CFP, read my blog post for some more context on the format of the preconference, and email me with any and all questions. (Full CFP below to save you the click-through!)
I'll be sharing more details about the keynote speakers, their talks, and preconference accessibility in a series of upcoming blog posts on the ARSTM website. For early notifications when those blogs go up, please subscribe to the ARSTM listserv!
If you are interested in serving as a reviewer for conference proposals (reviewers will each get 3-4 individual papepresentation abstracts of no more than 300 words), please fill out this [email protected] 2020 reviewer form.
Thank you all and happy Friday!Cagle

[email protected] 2020 Virtual Preconference on Social Justice

Abstract submission deadline: Thursday, September 4, 2020 at 11:59pm ET
Decision notification: Wednesday, September 30, 2020
Papers/presentations due for upload: Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 11:59 ET
Preconference date: 12:00-6:30pm ET, Wednesday, November 18, 2020
The Association for Rhetoric of Science, Technology, and Medicine (ARSTM) will host its annual preconference prior to the National Communication Association conference. We will meet online via a video conferencing platform on November 18, 2020, the day before the 106th Annual Convention of National Communication Association.
The preconference will be a half-day virtual gathering of RSTM scholars presenting about, reflecting on, and planning actions related to the theme of social justice. All sessions will be live-captioned by professional CART captioners.

What is the virtual [email protected] 2020 preconference about?

For this [email protected] 2020 preconference, we invite you to consider how the rhetorical and social dimensions of science, technology, and medicine (STM) intersect with (in)justices of all kinds. Rhetoricians are well positioned to consider how STM discourses might enable or preclude just social processes and outcomes. The inextricable social and material threads of STM’s many onto-epistemological systems have real consequences for real people. And rhetoric offers multiple tools for making sense of these consequences and striving to bend these systems towards justice.
Social justice, as concept, study, and practice, resists reduction. Natasha Jones, Kristen Moore, and Rebecca Walton describe social justice as “the bridge from diversity to inclusion” (2016, p. 219). It is the messy, complex, and constant work of “redressing inequities and acknowledging harm” in service of dismantling systems of oppression (Jones et al., 2016, p. 219). The ongoing nature of social justice work is reflected in the fact that this is a repeat theme from the 2014 [email protected] preconference, which took up social justice as a key concern in and of science.
As rhetoricians of STM, we can use our expertise to address the particular ways rhetoric, science, technology, and medicine are intertwined with (in)justice and people’s experiences of injustice. Rhetoricians have shown injustice’s ubiquitous entanglement with RSTM topics, from disease (see, e.g., Raquel Robvais’s work on Sickle Cell Anemia) to metaphor (see, e.g., Leah Ceccarelli’s work on the frontier metaphor in science) to medical theories (see, e.g., John Lynch’s work on genetics and race) to technological interpellations of minoritized people (see, e.g., Chris Gilliard’s work on surveillance and racial profiling). These examples illustrate how rhetoricians can theorize, circulate, and act on ideas about rhetoric and justice in order to make sense of the scientific, technological, and medical strands undergirding historical and contemporary systems of oppression.
And not only can we do this work. We should do this work. As the ARSTM leadership wrote in our June 8, 2020, “Statement on Anti-Black Racism and the Murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, David McAtee, and Others”:
As rhetoricians of science, technology, and medicine, it is our ethical responsibility to acknowledge and reckon with the injustices central to the topics we study. And it is our responsibility to critique and resist the use of science, technology, and medicine as tools for the oppression of Black, Brown, and Indigenous People. We can and should use the rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine to call out and address institutional racism and to amplify and support those who are already doing that work, from #BlackInSTEM advocates to anti-surveillance community groups to reproductive justice activists and beyond.
In service of this ethical responsibility, we envision the [email protected] 2020 preconference as a place to tease out, share, and deliberate on the connections to social justice that unquestionably exist in all our work. We also envision the preconference as an opportunity to reflect on how we can acknowledge harms and redress inequities in our professional communities.
For the 2020 [email protected] Preconference, we invite individual papers that address or embody the following questions:
  • What does “social justice” mean in the context of your research questions, research sites, methodologies, and teaching of RSTM? What frameworks for justice can and/or do you bring to your RSTM work?
  • How have science, technology, and medicine contributed to injustices, both historical and contemporary? How has science, technology, and medicine been used in the pursuit of justice, both historically and today?
  • How can engaged RSTM contribute to social justice efforts? How can RSTM amplify the work of practitioners and activists?
  • How do our professional RSTM spaces and practices contribute to (in)justice? What social justice actions should institutional leaders and privileged members of the field in particular take to acknowledge harms and redress inequities?

How will the virtual [email protected] 2020 preconference work?

The preconference will have some traditional elements, such as keynote speakers, prepared papers and/or presentations, Q&A with paper and/or presentation authors, and networking opportunities. However, to make this work in a virtual format, we’ll be approaching these traditional elements in a somewhat non-traditional fashion. Here’s the process:
  1. Applicants submit abstracts.
Interested authors are invited to submit individual papepresentation abstracts for anonymous peer review.
  1. Accepted authors upload a full paper and/or video recording of a presentation.
Authors with accepted abstracts will submit a 1000-1500 word paper and/or 5-10 minute video-recorded presentation to a secure cloud platform 2 weeks prior to the preconference.
  1. Attendees read/view papers/presentations in advance.
Attendees will have 2 weeks to read and watch uploaded papers and presentations prior to the preconference.
  1. Attendees and authors join the live preconferencefor a keynote panel followed by Q&Asessions with papepresentation authors.
On the day of the preconference, we will begin with a traditional keynote panel with accomplished speakers and audience Q&A.Following that, we will have a series of paper discussion sessions in which a session chair briefly introduces 3-4 papers and then the remaining synchronous meeting time is dedicated to Q&Awith the audience. Attendees will be able to come and go as needed based on their schedules.

How do I submit a proposal to give a papepresentation at the [email protected] 2020 preconference?

In an individual abstract of 300 words or fewer, detail how your paper and/or presentation will further our understanding of social justice in relation to rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine as a research site and/or as a professional space. Individual abstracts may have multiple authors. Because of this year’s abbreviated virtual format, we are not inviting panel proposals.
Send your abstract as an attachment without any identifying information to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) by September 4, 2020. Please use “ARSTMPreconference Submission” as your email subject, and provide your preferred contact information and the contact information for any co-authors in the email body. Any questions about this CFP and the [email protected] 2020 preconference may be addressed to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
For more details about the preconference, please be sure to subscribe to the ARSTM listserv, where we'll share a series of blog posts with announcements about keynote speakers, membership costs, and other details over the coming weeks.

2020.08.29 01:21 conspiretoreason Some help with my OC please?

So I've been writing about some experiences in my early life that I'd like someone to help me out with. The feedback I've received is that it doesn't seem plausible so I really just need some help with my wording to move past that last barrier. Here is the OC
We all have stories from our childhood that we can never really explain; or forget. Things happen that we never thought were possible, or just downright seem crazy. My life has been full of these stories to everyone else’s disbelief; for the most part.
We’ll start with the earliest story I can remember. I was about 4 years old helping my mother clean out a large cathedral church in our eastern Kentucky mountains that had been abandoned for a few decades and this was 1999 so it had been a while since anyone had been here and it showed. We explored for a bit in the old offices of the clergy and nothing had really been left behind besides sermon transcripts, journals, and notes that I would later learn to be theology research.
I figured since my mom was busy and not watching me that I probably shouldn’t enter whatever lie in wait for me, but my 4-year-old brain kept telling me to go inside and see what’s in there. I slowly and quietly twisted the knob and a pungent smell burned my nostrils. It smelled like fuel and burnt hair and left a lasting aftertaste in my mouth and nose. I stood in the doorway holding my fisher price flashlight that changed colors and looked around the room when I felt a sudden breeze and the door creaked shut behind me.
I made it to the door without making any noise with my clumsy 4-year-old legs and when I tried to turn the knob, I felt an extreme burning sensation in my hand that extended all the way through my body. It felt like someone holding a butane torch to my hand from the inside out. I quickly let go of the knob and blew on my hand.
I had winced so loudly that it echoed throughout the room. The moving started again. It was now bustling with people in the pews, all chanting and praying with music I didn’t recognize.
Had I taken the wrong door and found a new church? No there’s no way, the cathedral sat upon a large hill that you had to walk to.
When I finally blinked, I was sitting in the front row of the pews and my mother was standing over me yelling at me. She told me that she had found my under the furniture in the locked room. She had to kick the door in to find me and kept yelling and asking me how I got in and how I got so filthy.

Laura weakens to tropical storm strength over Arkansas

Laura continues to rapidly weaken as strengthene southwesterly shear and prolonged land interaction wreak havoc on the cyclone's convective structure. Animated multispectral imagery depicts a much weaker and much smaller convective core which is becoming increasingly displaced to the northeast of the partially exposed low-level circulation. The center of circulation is currently crossing over the Louisiana-Arkansas border as the system continues northward along the western periphery of a broad subtropical ridge. Intensity estimates derived from satellite imagery, radar data, and surface observations indicate that Laura has weakened to tropical storm strength, with maximum one-minute sustained winds falling to 60 knots (70 knots).

Forecast Discussion

Last updated: Thursday, 27 August 2020 - 1:10 PM CDT (18:10 UTC)

Laura will continue to rapidly weaken as it turns north-northeastward

Laura is expected to continue to steadily weaken through the end of the week as it becomes increasingly entangled within mid-latitude westerly flow and battles even stronger southwesterly shear. Laura is expected to weaken to tropical depression strength sometime by Friday morning as the exposed low-level circulation drifts across northeastern Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel. As Laura accelerates toward the east on Friday night and Saturday morning, it is expected to become completely stripped of its deep convection and transition into a weak remnant low.
However, an approaching frontal zone over the Ohio valley will introduce baroclinic forcing to the low-level circulation, allowing it to quickly transition into a powerful extratropical cyclone off the coast of New England on Sunday. The invigorated cold-core cyclone will make landfall over Nova Scotia on Sunday morning and pass across Newfoundland the following morning. Even as we head into the early morning hours on Tuesday, Laura is expected to maintain tropical storm-force winds as it heads out over the open waters of the northern Atlantic.

Significant impacts linger through the beginning of the upcoming week

Though Laura is no longer a hurricane, the threat of significant weather hazards lingers throughout the end of the week. Dangerous storm surge generated by Laura earlier in the day is expected to result in elevated water levels which should last for the next several hours. In areas where the rising waters were able to penetrate far inland, widespread flooding may take several days to recede, even after Laura is long gone from the region.
Widespread flash flooding, urban flooding, and small stream flooding is expected to continue across portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas over the next couple of days as the threat of heavy rainfall extends northeastward along Laura's forecast track. Additional rainfall may also lead to widespread minor river flooding with some isolated areas of moderate river flooding. Heavy rainfall is expected to reach the Middle Mississippi valley, the lower Ohio valley, and the Tennessee valley through the end of the week.

2020.08.25 22:03 smolmello How can I get a stranger across the country to ship something to me from their local store?

Okay so I’ve been on the hunt for a white MALM chest of drawers for months. All IKEA’s within 500 miles of me has this item sold out and keeps giving arbitrary dates for when it’ll be in stock that never come true. IKEAs customer service line also isn’t accepting calls now but stores are back open. (It didn’t seem like stores have individual call lines for customers, or I missed it.) There’s only one store that I’ve found that is showing enough stock that I could purchase it online and pick it up in store. That’s Draper, Utah. I’m 1,457 miles away and ikea only delivers from the most local store to your address. (As far as I can tell)
So how the heck can I pay someone to pick up a big piece of furniture (with me covering shipping of course) and sent it to me in Kentucky?

Latest news

Last updated: Monday, 24 August 2020 - 10:45 PM EDT (02:45 UTC)

Laura has crossed over into the Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Laura made landfall along the coast of the Pinar del Rio province in western Cuba at around 8:00 PM EDT on Monday evening. Since then, the storm has tracked across Cuba and has emerged over the Gulf of Mexico. Satellite imagery and radar data provided by the Cuban Meteorological Institute indicates that Laura's convective structure has become better organized with deep convection beginning to wrap around the cyclone's circulation in response to decreasing northerly shear. The cyclone continues to produce persistent convective activity to its south.
Intensity estimates derived from satellite imagery analysis and recent aerial reconnaissance data indicate that Laura's strength remains largely unchanged, with maximum one-minute sustained winds holding steady at 55 knots (65 miles per hour). Laura remains embedded within deep-layer east-southeasterly flow along the southern periphery of a persistent subtropical ridge situated over the western Atlantic Ocean.
Latest data NHC Advisory #21 11:00 PM EDT (03:00 UTC)
Current location: 22.7°N 84.0°W 28 miles NW of Pinar del Rio, Cuba
789 miles SE of Port Arthur, Texas
Forward motion: WNW (290°) at 18 knots (20 mph)
Maximum winds: 55 knots (65 mph)
Intensity: Tropical Storm
Minimum pressure: 996 millibars (29.42 inches)

Forecast Discussion

Last updated: Monday, 24 August 2020 - 10:45 PM EDT (02:45 UTC)

Laura should reach hurricane strength by Tuesday morning

Now that Laura has emerged over the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to quickly take advantage of improving environmental conditions. Weakened shear, very warm sea-surface temperatures with high ocean heat content, abundant mid-level moisture, and strong diffluence aloft will fuel the cyclone's intensification, allowing it to reach hurricane strength overnight or early Tuesday morning. Though Laura is moving rather quickly, it should have plenty of time over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico to undergo significant strengthening. The National Hurricane Center is calling for a peak intensity of 95 knots (110 miles per hour) shortly before landfall on Wednesday night.
On Wednesday afternoon, Laura is expected to reach the southwestern corner of the subtropical ridge and will steadily gain latitude until it turns north-northwestward, taking aim at the Texas/Louisiana border during the late evening hours on Wednesday. Laura is expected to make landfall at its peak intensity, which will be just short of Category 3 major hurricane strength. Within hours of landfall, prolonged land interaction will begin to wear away at the cyclone's strength as it turns toward the north-northeast along the Texas/Lousiana border.
Laura is expected to drop to tropical storm strength over Arkansas on Thursday evening and tropical depression strength over southwestern Kentucky on Friday evening. Toward the end of the week, Laura will turn increasingly toward the northeast and by Friday will be accelerating rather quickly toward the east along the northern periphery of the subtropical ridge.

2020.08.21 05:03 autotldr Kentucky man faces $750K fine for breaking quarantine rules by detouring to Banff

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 32%. (I'm a bot)
"They located Mr. Pennington up on Sulphur Mountain. As a result of him again allegedly being in violation of the quarantine through his travels, there was some consultation with a quarantine officer in Calgary and the decision was made to charge Mr. Pennington under the federal Quarantine Act," Keibel said.
Keibel said there were nine tickets given out in Alberta by the end of June and the one charge under the Quarantine Act but she wasn't aware of any others.
She said those violating the rules are given strict instructions and Pennington had received a warning after his initial ticket.
Keibel said Pennington was escorted out of the park boundaries and told to continue on his journey.
The Canada Border Services Agency only allows such travellers to enter at one of five crossings: Abbotsford-Huntingdon, Kingsgate, Osoyoos, Coutts and North Portal.
They are barred from driving through national parks, leisure sites and tourism locations and receive a hang tag for their rear-view mirror indicating the date they must depart Canada.

2020.08.20 01:06 thefountain73 Classic Rock

Classic Rock
Still of the Night.
John Jeffries adjusted his Tuxedo jacket; he caught the scuffed look on his swanky new shoes. He thought of improvising with his handkerchief, yet he stuck to his rule that was only for blowing his nose. He tapped the left jacket pocket, feeling the comforting bulge of his wallet and his back copy of his mix tape which he had scribbled BIG GUNS on it with felt black marker.
It had five songs on it and this was the only five he needed this year of the Lords of Rock 1989.
  1. Still of the Night by Whitesnake.
  2. Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N Roses
  3. Highway to Hell by AC/DC
  4. I want to Know what love is by Foreigner
  5. Heroes by David Bowie
Heroes finished the set. Great song to be driving by yourself in the suburbs. John patted his pants, found a lighter bulge. That was for in case a hot girl wanted to smoke and he was the only guy in the vicinity who was armed and ready to light up. But wait, that wasn’t his lighter! Bloody Hell he quickly readjusted himself and located his lighter in his top pocket.
He patted his back pants. He didn’t have a condom and let’s face it he didn’t need it. Tonight wasn’t about getting lucky or then again what if he did get lucky? Well he was sure The Burns would have a steady supply. He just hoped he wasn’t a professional bullshit artist like everyone said he was. John always gave someone the benefit of the doubt unless he personally caught you out as a liar.
The lights put this weird green aura over the Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot. John heard years ago that Mel Gibson used to work there, but hey he couldn’t confirm it. It was before he was even born. How funny the thought of Mad Mel serving fried chicken. “You may take our Chicken but you will never take our NUGGETS!” Quietly chuckling to himself, he checked his watch, should be at the party in fifteen minutes.
The night had stillness, it presented a good time for thinking. John stood there, eating his Kentucky chips and pondering the last few years of his life. He had one goal this year, his final year of high school and that was to ditch his fag reputation. He knew deep down he wasn’t the first kid that the tough kids looks to grab and stretch his nuts over the basketball pole, but he knew he was on the reserve bench for that list.
And here he was the last night of school, he was still a virgin, he wasn’t cool, his grades were okay and his photo in the yearbook was just passable, the zits had to show up yet they had all year so much for that silly rubbing toothpaste on them cure! Why did he listen to his Grandmother, he loved her but the poor old woman was a kooky as a North Korean watch. He checked his watch, which thankfully wasn’t North Korean. The Burns took some weird liking to him, why he liked him he didn’t have a clue. He just knew that he wanted him at the party, actually he wanted the whole leaving year at the party so he could just literally say everybody showed up.
John walked towards his deep green Holden Torana. He carefully pulled himself into the car, careful not to muff up the tuxedo. John pressed play on his tape player and the opening sonic of the Whitesnake song filled the car. Now he was ready to drive.
There was a tap on the window, some guy who he didn’t know was insistent he open the window. He was mouthing something. John opened the door. The guy pulled him out onto the harsh carpark gravel. John noticed the orange dribble of Fanta near his scuffed shoes. The attacker kicked him in the back. Two other guys jumped out the scrubby bushes like ninjas, but wearing blue Nike trackies and Adiddas T-shirts. Bogan ninjas of Bankstown! The attacker jumped in the car, the others opened up the back doors and got in. Whitesnake was still playing, this time it didn’t care that its master was face down in the Kentucky Fried Chicken carpark. The car revved and sped away.
John pulled himself up.
Fuck!
Fuck!
Fuck!
He stomped on the ground. A car pulled up. The window wound down.
“You dancing, motherfucker?”
The car drove on through the drive through, guy in front and laughing girls in the back.
Fuck!
John looked across the carpark. There was a pay phone across the street.
John took a deep breath, would the cool guy ring his mum to come and pick him up?
No the cool guy would get in a helicopter, track those assholes down and fire a hellfire missile into their car and then screw a beautiful woman while the cars burned in the background.
But that was the movies.
John went back inside to Kentucky Fried chicken.
“May I help you” asked the 15 year old male cashier.
John saw the photo up on the wall as this kid as employee of the month.
“I’ve just had my car stolen”.
“Did you want gravy with that”?
The cashier laughed at his own joke.
John started laughing himself.
Fucking smart arse, but hey it was a good line.
“I’m going to the end of formal party and I’ve just had my car stolen”?
“Did you want to use the phone; you can call your parents if you like”?
John took a beat to think about it.
Do I want to be that baby boy running back to the parents or am I going to be the man I want to be!
“No, I’ll just leave it.”
The cashier threw John some refresher towels.
“Thanks”.
John looked at his watch, 7.30 already – he knew the party would be about half an hour from full swing and everyone would be there already.
It was only twenty minutes up the highway. John threw the last refresher towel.
John knew what the bad kids did. They hitched before they got cars. John got out on the highway, he started walking, the car could wait, and he had a party to go to. John held out his thumb and started walking.
Welcome to the Jungle
A blue Ford pulled up the side of the road. The driver looked ripped; he could hear Welcome to the Jungle coming from his in car tape deck.
“Where are you headed?”
“20 minutes up the highway, I’m going to my formal party”
“Well, wouldn’t want to miss that now would we”
John was hunched down, the long grass by the side of the road up to his knees.
The car door flung open. John got in.
“I’m Hugh”.
“I’m John”.
“Pleased to meet you John, you got a light?”
John felt his hands around back to his bulge. Shit, wrong bulge, he felt around to his top pocket and pulled out the lighter with the KISS logo.
Hugh was wearing a blue flannelette shirt and jeans, he was driving barefoot. Shit, not a good look. His Grandmother always said there were two kinds of people who didn’t wear shoes whilst driving. Hippies in combi vans and people with bad intentions. And this wasn’t a combi van.
“Knights in Satan’s Service”!
Kooky Nan might finally be right!
Hugh pulled this HUGE skull bong from the driver’s seat. He lit it and started smoking. Plumes of smoke filled the car. Hugh started up the car, driving while the car was filled with the puffs of cloud. Hugh put the wind screen wipers on.
“It’s not clearing the smoke man.”
“Maybe you should put the windows down”?
“No man, this is part of the fun”
Hugh kept driving and driving slow, some car whizzed past hitting the horn.
Da Da da da da, da da da da da !
“Bummer about those musical horns being banned”!
Hugh punched another cone as he drove one handed.
“Did you say you were still in school”?
“Yes”.
“But that’s not a school uniform, or are you from one of those fancy schools where you go for school holidays overseas?”
John pressed his face right up to the glass of the car.
“Hugh I think you had better pull over, this is too hard to see.”
The sounds of sirens cut through the end of Welcome to the Jungle.
“Not the cops man, please not the cops.”
John could see a red blur come though the smoke in the car. Hugh sped up the car.
The car roared up the street. Hugh kept his hand down on the horn as he sped up the highway. The police gave pursuit.
“Hugh man just pull over, there is only smoke in the car”!
“It’s not the smoke I’m worried about; it’s what I have in the boot”!
Hugh hit the car hard right.
The car bounced and bounced, John couldn’t tell where he was yet he knew whatever track they were on more suited a four wheel drive.
The car smashed into a tree.
“Run” yelled Hugh.
Smoke poured out of the car, smoke poured out of the engine.
A Kangaroo jumped over the car, nearly taking John’s head with it.
He could see police at the top of the embankment. He ran, Hugh ran in the opposite direction. Torches came through the bush like those nasty government types in the movie E.T and he didn’t have a spaceship to whisk him away. Hell even Elliot on a bicycle would be a welcome sight right about now.
John danced over some rocks and made a beeline to the river, where the moonlight lit up the knee high stream. Vines blocked his path. John ducked underneath and made his way to the embankment. The police reached the car, they were shoving their flashlights through the car. John heard one of them mention something about checking the boot.
John ran.
John tried to keep his shoes out of the sand. He checked his wallet, mixtape and ciggie lighter. All check and phew.
John entered a clearing, he saw torches coming towards him, but these torches were different, they were lit by flame, not by batteries. As the multiple lights got closer, John looked down, he was standing in the middle of a huge pentagram. The sign of the devil. He knew because some Christian guy had shown up that year to talk about the evils of Dungeons and Dragons and Ozzy Osbourne albums.
The figures were dressed in brown robes, they chanted hail Satan, hail Satan.
The figures entered the surroundings. They got closer, continuing the chant. John tried to back track. The pentagram was painted red and he noticed an alter near the tree.
“Look guys I play heavy metal to, I even once tried to play Led Zeppelin IV backwards, and I couldn’t understand it though”.
Hail Satan, Hail Satan.
He was now surrounded. Holy shit could this night get any worse!
The lead guy stepped forward and pulled out a knife that would make Crocodile Dundee feel inferior.
Highway to Hell
The Satan worshippers grabbed John and he started to scream. They placed him on the alter.
The lead guy came over John.
“In the night of the moon, the still of the night, we shall welcome you to the jungle, Satan has brought us a gift, we asked for a sacrifice. We would have been most happy with a sheep or even a stoned Koala, yet you gave us this Lord Satan. Now Jezebel, fire up the song and we shall commence the sacrifice.”
Jezebel moved the ghetto blaster to the centre of the circle. Her finger with a long black nail hit the play button. The play button gave a chunky sound.
John recognised the opening chords straight away. It was the opening of ACDC’s Highway to Hell. He knew that sound anywhere.
“Right, now where were we, oh that’s right.”
The police burst through the trees.
“Now what are you jokers doing, didn’t the Freemasons let you in?”
The Satanists scattered like cockroaches when you turn the lights on at 1.14 am.
“Bloody Satanists”.
The police officer went over to the tape deck and hit the off button.
“They’ve been coming here for years”.
The officer put his black boot over the pentagram and started kicking it.
“And what’s your role in all this son?”
“Listen officer I didn’t volunteer for this shit, I just wanted to go to my after party. I was at my high school formal and I just want to get up the highway”.
The police officers all started to laugh.
“Wow your night has turned out like one of those bad eighties comedies. Okay, quote a bible passage silently and we’ll give you a lift.”
John brushed off his tuxedo, he walked past Hugh’s smashed car and made sure he didn’t say anything.
The police officers took him up the ridge, away from the jungle and got him in the back seat of the police car.
“Just crazy tonight, some lunatic just drove off the highway, then the robes are out dancing about. What next?”
The police officer, pulled out his cigarette, darn it. I don’t have a light.
John pulled out the KISS lighter and lit up for the officer.
“KISS eh” he carefully inspected the lighter.
“I told my kids to avoid them, they aren’t Satanists are they?”
“No sir, just a very good rock band who like makeup and knee high boots.”
The officer took a long drag of the cigarette, long enough to take in every single inch of smoke his lungs could take. He blew it all out into the night wind.
“Sounds just like my ex. Get in the car son, tell us where to drop you off.”
The officer stubbed out the cigarette, half finished. Its red hot embers spilling on the black bitchimum.
John got in the car, a rage cage separated him and the officers of the law.
A call came through on the radio, the driver picked it up.
“Disturbance at a private residence, all cars in the vicinity are to respond. I repeat all cars” the female announcer ordered.
“What are we going to do with this kid “ ?
“I’m a man of my promises, I said we’ll drive him to the party and that we shall do, he can just sit in the back and keep his head down. “
“You got that kid! Keep your Fucking head down!”
The two officers laughed, put the V8 into gear and burned rubber on the otherwise quiet suburban street.
The police car pulled up to the scene, police cars where everywhere, their lights flashing and bouncing off their shiny rooftops.
“Get down son and pull that blanket over you”
John checked his watch.
The time was Nine pm already.
He wanted to swear, yet he was in a police car after all.
He had a peak outside the window, some guy was running around with his shirt off and wearing a red bandana, John Rambo style. Of all the nights for the crazies to come out.
The police were all behind their cars with pump action shot guns aimed at the ranter.
One officer grabbed the mega phone.
“Right mate, we want to get home, put the gun down and this will end nice and easy.”
John noticed there was a loud speaker on the bottom of the car floor. Time to do something cool.
John picked it up and wound down the window.
John pointed the megaphone out the window.
“Hello, I’m really late for my after formal party and while at first I didn’t want to go, seeing though tonight I’ve had my car stolen, been chased by police and Satanists. I’ll let you decide which is better. I just want to get to the party and it looks like I don’t have a ride until you decide you are outgunned, out manned and would have a better chance if you just put that gun on the nice mowed lawn I’m sure you spent plenty of time on just to impress the neighbours.”
All the police turned around and started at John at his mega phone.
They turned around again and saw that the ranter was putting his gun down on the lawn. The police charged him and tackled him to the ground. They turned around and cuffed him. He was then passed on to the officer who were driving John. They grabbed him and brought him over to the back of the car.
The ranter was sitting right next to John. He was cuffed and had a green blanket over him.
“I wasn’t cool in high school and I never got invited to parties, I know how you feel”.
Great thought John, my future life played out in front of me.
He held out his cuffed hands.
John gave him a small but nervous fist bump.
The police drove him to the nearest cross street from the party. John got out of the car.
“Thank you officers, it’s been quite a night!”
“No worries kid, just try to stay out of trouble and remember what I said about bad 80’s comedies? Well the nerd always gets the girl in the end. Good luck kid”
John closed the heavy door behind him and waved as the car sped back down the highway.
Jees I hope that cop was right. My adrenaline is so pumping, I’m just busting for a release, like the Marvin Gaye song “I need Sexual Healing.
John brushed his clothes, checked his bulges and made his way to the party.
I Want to Know What Love is
John walked down the green path, unpaved. A dog of a house barked with furiousity, busting to get a chase in.
John kept his eye on the dog and casually walked past.
A car drove past, packed full of party goers. The car stopped. John could hear the song coming from the radio. I want to know what Love is by Foreigner.
The car sped off, there was a girl standing there in the moonlight. John froze.
It was Joanne Banks. The girl of his dreams, with beautiful blonde hair, azure blue eyes and long legs that just kept stretching and stretching to shit knock it off the last thing you want to do is have an accident in your pants.
She was wearing a white bubble skirts that caked out. She had a white leather jacket over her shoulders.
“You need a date for the party?” said Joanne.
“Sure, you can’t have a tux without a girl” said John.
Wow that was cool like something James Bond would say. Maybe this night was going to be the night!
John put out his elbow. She hooked on.
John did a little jump and kicked in both of his heels. He started to sing Putting on the Ritz.
Joanne laughed.
“Last party of the year 1920?” said Joanne.
John omitted a slight laugh.
“I just love that song. It sounds so elegant and sophisticated. Yes, last party of the year, cant’ exactly say I’ve worn myself out on them”.
“Seriously, you aren’t missing out on much, the best parties are the ones you don’t get invited to. Trust me Mr Elegant and Sophisticated!”
Joanne tugged at the leather jacket.
John stopped dead in the middle of the street. The wind picked up in the willow tree. John ushered Joanne out of the way as another car full of party goers made the journey down the hill.
Go ahead ask her.
“Why didn’t we ever hook up”?
John started at her straight into her dreamy eyes and heavy mascara.
Her monster hair was swept back like a Bonnie Tyler music video.
“Simple” said Joanne return the gaze back.
“I was going out with other guys and you were always just a really good friend to me, why would I rock that boat. Why would I wreck the best drama solver I know, be in a situation where I don’t have that any more. Do you think my glitz and glamour friends would know half this shit? I don’t !”
Joanne grabbed him by the shoulders.
“And that’s because I have you”!
She kissed him on the cheek.
That bulge in his pants increased and it wasn’t the lighter.
“Now let’s go to this party, we are starting to get in the fashionably late zone”.
John held his grip on her hand tighter.
“And you better let go of my hand because if Shane’s friends see you, they will kick your arse”
John let go, nothing more embarrassing than having your backside kicked in front of girls, let alone guys. Plus, tonight had already had its fair share of comedic like drama. What did the officer say “Just like a bad Eighties Comedy?
They hit a steep decline, she was scraping her heels on the gravel. The house had balloons all over the trees outside of the house.
They got to the entrance of the party
Heroes
A friend from school Daniel Hazel walked up to John.
Daniel Hazel, otherwise known at school as the Hazel Nut. This kid had more problems than a one armed bricklayer. How the hell did he get an invite?
“Great to see you here John, it’s a good party, well any party where I’m allowed In and I haven’t had my arse kicked yet is highly appreciated. “
John motioned Joanne to go without him.
“So a no fighting rule”?
“Yeah something like that”
“You know what John, you were always a good friend to me, I know I wasn’t the coolest guy in high school, I know you never had anything to gain by being my friend, yet seeing though this is technically the last party of the school year. Thank you!”
Daniel held out his hand and they both shook it.
John thought to himself he was a nice kid, mixed up but nice. But he was wrong about never having anything to gain by hanging out with him. Hazel Nut made John look good and at school sometimes that was all it took.
“Well thank you for being a good guy. I know we haven’t hung out much this year. “
“That’s okay man, I know you are busy”.
David Bowie’s song Heroes could be heard coming from the back of the house.
John pulled out his mix tape.
“I want you to have this.”
Daniel inspected the writing, it was hard to read in the mixed light night.
Wherever you take that tape, it will give you an adventure.
John put his arm around Daniel and they both walked into the party.
End of Side One.
